| Re: Whats the best rig for cod? ggf, I guess that if you're talking about Boat Fishing here, then running ledger is probably you're man (for drift/reef fishing at least), but I'll defer to the boat experts on this one! As far as shore or pier fishing goes, I'm not so sure it's the best way. I prefer to use either a 1-hook paternoster or a pulley rig when Cod Fishing. I usually use a snood of about 2-2.5 feet and lately an impact shield behind the lead to double up as bait protector and clip down tool. As far as building the paternoster rig goes, I use a QF swivel at the top (to join to main line), a crane swivel trapped between 2 beads to join to the trace line (which is 80lb) and two power gum stop knots to hold the beads either side of the swivel, that way if I have to change my hook length I can just re-position the swivel and carry on using the impact shield in the same place. I like to finish this off with a pennel rig, tied with a 2/0 or 3/0 main hook (preferably Kamasan B940) and a size 1 sliding hook (same pattern) fastened with some shrink tube to the snood. I think I've had pretty much every single one of my decent cod/codling on this set-up, although sometimes use a wishbone hook length too. HTH, Cheers, JB. |

| Re: Whats the best rig for cod ? From the boat - running ledger always works fine - when the fish are bitting. When things are slow its always easy to start thinking that its your bait or rig or whatever. We all know some days the bite is hot and on other days its dead. You can try adjusting the length of the trace, though, as sometimes a shorter length will keep the bait on the bottom in a running tide (for example). I mostly fish in the Severn Estuary, which has strong currents so a shorter trace is better (in my opinion...). KK http://kitkatyum.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/ |

I do a lot of boat fishing in the Bristol Channel and when you have tides that rip through at up to 7-8 knots on the ebb in 80 feet of water a short snood length is a must....and so is an 8oz grip lead to anchor it to the bottom __________________ Eventually all things merge into one, and a River runs through it.
