Re: Pennel Rig sea fishing rig i dontno why but i'm not keen on twisting the line round the top hook on pennels. in the past i've secured it with rig tube after threading the line through the eye but find that, if clipped down, its not secured well enough and the hooks get separated. now i tie the top hook in with a spade end knot and add the point hook to the tag end , form blood knot next to top hook it'll stretch about 3-4 " when pulled tight , just right for calmari. geejayy. __________________ 2007, sessions..27 total blanks ..9( wot a comeback though), species....21 2008, sessions..12,total blanks..1, species,..10 http://ukfishingforums.darkbb.com/index.htm

Re: Pennel Rig sea fishing rig Bit of a line twister myself ,have used this method for years with no problems.I do change the mono after every session tho.A good tip is to use hooks with turned down eyes for the sliding hook part of the rig. This allows the mono to run straight through the eye and not kink it as you do when using a conventional straight eyed hook ![]()

Re: Pennel Rig sea fishing rig Yep, agree with the "turned down eye" option.. I usually heat up the Kamasan's eye and bend it with pliers. This seems to work fine (most of the time), but every so often as it's high carbon steel, they snap. Which is a pain. Also, they're quite awkward to hold when you're heating them, and you can get a burnt finger (diddums). What pattern with turned down eye do you use, CS?

Re: Pennel Rig sea fishing rig Use Mustad 79510 Viking Pennel Hooks, they come with the eyes already turned down,in sizes 1/0,2/0,3/0,4/0.Have also used Sundridge Saltwater stainless pennels ,which are also pre bent.

Re: Pennel Rig sea fishing rig Heres a photo of a typical pennel, used for Cod in the Bristol Channel, hook sizes can be varied for different uses. The turned down eye on the secondary hook allows the mono to stay sraight ,without kinking. ![]()

Re: Pennel Rig sea fishing rig I use a couple of silicone stop beads to trap the top hook in a pennel. They don't damage the line and are easy to move up and down depending on the bait presented.
