Re: Long Range sea fishing rig

for those of you who buy leads down ere you can buy impact leads now which have the impact shield fixed to the lead that way you dont have to worry about the bead being tight enough or anything its fixed to the lead on the wire! perfect!

Yep, these are pretty cool - the breakaway type ones with a red impact slider work a treat, and they're a good pattern too, the only problem is that you don't get the same aerodynamic protection for the bait (if this is important), and short of cutting off the prongs, if you need a plain, you're stuffed!!

I do like those leads though - been using them a while too, keeps the amount of hardware needed in a trace right down!

Re: Long Range sea fishing rig

Just so we all know what we're talking about.. This is how it should be set up.
Alternatly you can use the impact shield already fixed to the lead.
This is the one I use now because its even less drag, and also ive never had a bait not release when set up like this.

Re: Long Range sea fishing rig

good pic pixy, i would say though instead of having the impact sheild righty up against the bead and crimp/stopknot leave a cm gap, as its more effective at releasing it.

I used to use the sheild but now only use the impact leads as having your bait clipped right down by the lead makes it more aerodynamic. i.e. it goes further!

Re: Long Range sea fishing rig

Agree with Paul .no need for impact shields since impact leads came on the scene. Also the shield used to get stuck a lot when fishing mud and clay areas.

bigfish is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Long Range sea fishing rig

The only time I have had an impact shield fail to release is when I have put the hook point through the slit

LOL

When I made some impact-shield rigs for Emma, she complained about the bait not releasing, when I watched her bait up, she was trapping the hook in between the line and the back of the impact shield.

I now use Gemini SRT springs, they hold the snood under tension and release perfectly as soon as the sinker hits the water.
