It's just knot cricket Folks, I've tried to attach my obscene garden strimmer thread 60lb shock leader o my 30lb main line...here's the result for anyone who fancies a laugh ha ha... The knot is secure alright but I sure don't really fancy casting it! It tends to snag in the top eyelet on reeling in too. I took a butchers at greenheart's useful knots website and came up with this. The Albright seemed the most secure...the double surgeons knot looks like a total no go with this weight of line and the nail knot looks like it'll just slip out due to the toughness and diameter of the shock leader. Any pointers? The general advice I've read elsewhere is just get some tapered line on a spool! But surely there must be a way......superglue!?

Re: It's just knot cricket I have used the albright for ages, a good little knot, maybe try a bit of shrink tubing over it to reduce the snagging, use the low temperature stuff that the sell for carp rigs. __________________ Life is understood looking backwards, but it must be lived forwards.

Re: It's just knot cricket Hmm yea I did consider coating it in something...so it doesn't look too far out of the ordinary then? I'll just give it a go and see what happens. Cheers!

Re: It's just knot cricket my thoughts;- 1, that leader looks damn thick if the mainline is 30lb if it is indeed strimmer line it comes in 1.5/ 2.0/ or 3 mm diameter. i'd go for 6olb shockleader material, greased weasel or simalar at about .65mm . the narrower diameter will make a neater knot. 2, its probably a minor point but i don't like the way that albright knot leaves the tag end pointing down the leader and leaves a rough edge to catch on the rings or the reels level line during the cast. the knot i use is prob shown somewhere but i can't be a*sed to find the piccy so i'll describe it- tie a single over hand knot in the end of the leader and pass the main line through it. make the knot wet with saliva and pull tight ( wi me teeth). draw about 10 inches of main line through the knot to avoid incorperateing the area of main line that was crushed by tightening the overhand knot. make a 4 inch (aprox) loop and tie an............um........ spade end? / whip finnish ?/ sned ? knot , moisten and pull tight from both ends of the mainline. you should now have a neat barrel shaped knot that will pull down against the overhand knot . trim the tag ends and job done. tounament casters tend to use a blob instead of an overhand knot but i just don't trust them for fishing. just looked at g/h's link - a nail/snell or uni knot would do but you need the overhand knot to stop them slipping off the end. __________________ beer so many venues, so little time.

Re: It's just knot cricket Thanks, I'll try that and see how it comes out. The main line is 30lb 'storm thunderline', measures in at .45mm says the spool and seems very thin for that weight of line so I quite like it (is all X lb line the same width from whatever maker? I asumed it was pretty universal so to speak). The affectionately termed strimmer thread is 'Stren high impact hard mono leader' 60lb...doesn't appear to have a width measurement on the spool, I'm guessing it's about 1mm or something. I think I might just buy some different shock leader for a comparrison too. Greased weasel seems to be everyones fave.

| Re: It's just knot cricket Quote:
that stren is serviceable but try some weasel, its less hard and will knot easier, the sten would be good for rig bodys. if you go down the tapered leader route- they often taper right down to about 10-12lb which would cause a weak point if your on 30lb mainline . trim back the tapered end to match main line diameter b4 knotting to avoid this. __________________ beer so many venues, so little time.
