| Re: Fishing Rigs - Making you own Fishing Rigs Hi Ben I agree with idea that crimps can damage line. An old, but very effective, and cheap, is telephone wire. Get some old cable and carefully strip off the white plastic coating. You will find 5 or so very thin different coloured wires inside, each plastic coated. Separate these out and they can be used as stops. You twist the wire around the line and it will form around the line. You then simply twist it tight and it stays in place nicely. The advantage is that you can move it simply by untwisting and twisting tight again. This enables you to adjust the rig on the go. Another benefit is that sometimes if you are snagged and pull for a break the wire will suddenly give and slid down - this can free the hook. I know it sounds daft but trust me once you have made a few you soon get the knack. You can also use plastic caoted paper clips cut in half and attached with the wire as bait clips - not in the breakaway, genie, impact shield league, which i use as well but very cheap and expendable. Again on rough ground cheap if you lose and the paper clip will straighten out from a snag. For stops above and below beads and swivel about an inch is ok ( an inch twisted that is ) The Neil Mackellow`s of this world with a 200 yard plus power cast might say they slip but for most mortal people they are fine. | Re: Fishing Rigs - Making you own Fishing Rigs Hmmm, I can see the potential danger with crimps, but I have to say I've been using them for nearly 10 years now, and I've never (touch wood) had a breakage. I do always tie my rigs with 80lb line though, which probably helps, but let's face it, any knot or clip (or even QF) is a potential weak link. I think it's more a case of being careful with crimps, and not getting too carried away with the pliers! As it happens, I've now switched to trying PowerGum for stop knots, but that's only so I can then shrink wrap them with Carp rig stuff - thanks to JP for that tip - cos it looks neat! I've yet to see how they'll hold up on the beach. Useful for an impact shield though, if you have to add a new hook snood, just adjust the distance from the clip! Just my 2p. Cheers, JB. |

| Re: Fishing Rigs - Making you own Fishing Rigs Hi I bet the telephone wire would look neat with the carp shrink tube over it! Would be very streamlined as well - might give it a try! Mark |

| Re: Fishing Rigs - Making you own Fishing Rigs same opinion on crimps - yes this is a potential weakspot but using appropriate crimping pliers and ensuring you dont overtighten keeps it safe! i crimp so that with pressure the crimps can slide - they do not damage the line when applied in this manner. i find wrapping telephone wire a bit finicky and timeconsuming - it works well for bait stops on light hook snoods (where i would never consider crimping) but for the main rig line crimps have done me well for 12yrs! |
