Re: Fishing Rigs - Making you own Fishing Rigs

what i have thought about but never implimented was building all the snoods with clips on so you can have 1 blank with swivels crimped on and then just clip on whatever lentgh/size line you want with hook on, also be good for rebaiting, but i could never b arsed to chang all my rigs

Re: Fishing Rigs - Making you own Fishing Rigs

yeah it is definately worth doin that! i have got the trace holder for my tripod so i always have spares traces hanging up but once i find one that seems to be working i will keep that trace on and just change snoods. the gemini two way clips are ideal for this. - a typical situation where this is necessary was in the estuary on friday - the flounder all swallowed the hooks apart from one fish and i had to cut the snood, return the fish, pick up all the beads and sequins that had dropped off the snood then tie another hook on and bait up and then eventually 10mins later cast back out!
if i had pre-baited snoods hanging up i could have beached the fish swapped the snood with a pre-baited replica and cast straight back out within 2mins - then deal with the fish and return.
only really matters when match fishing i guess but when the fish are feeding i personally want rigs in the water as much as possible whether match fishing or pleasure - just coz the fishing is rarely hectic these days so need to take full advantage of it when it is!

I do exactly the same thing. If anyone else is fishing where I'm planning too I always ask if they have caught anything and the sizes of the fish. This makes my mind up when choosing hooks.

Re: Fishing Rigs - Making you own Fishing Rigs

I must be terribly lazy too, or just too busy (bit of both really), as I now don't bother making my rigs. I normally use a company in Wales called C-Rigs and I can get most rigs for £2.50 each. For every 5 I order I get one free, so that works out at £2 ish each. Given the amount of time I used to spend making them, and the frustration of it all, I figured it just wasn't worth the effort. C-Rigs make them far better than I ever could.

Re: Fishing Rigs - Making you own Fishing Rigs

Quite right Ben, for conger I use 250lb mono, I found wire tends to kink,
and according to the experts mono makes for better bait presentation.

Re: Fishing Rigs - Making you own Fishing Rigs

Ben

I don't do running repairs mate, if a rig is knackered it's consigned to Rig Room 101 and a new one goes on. C-Rigs will make any rig you ask for, just send them the specs and it's done.

It's just a matter of choice, some people like building them, I personally don't. I hardly get time to go fishing at the moment, let alone make rigs.

I'm not sure what the cost difference works out at. In pure material terms I reckon making your own saves you about 70% over a purchased one, but if you add time into the equation I would hazard a guess it costs more than a bought rig. But most importantly, quality counts, and I can't match C-Rigs quality.
