Folkestone Pier 03-11-11

Went out for a trip last night with Noel to Folkestone pier. Weather was absolutly blowing a gale when we arrived, in a S/E direction and there was a big sea as a result of this.

As we walked along te pier we could see wet patches where the waves had been splashing up and onto the pier, but as a result of this we were the only buggers up there, not even the pier marshall was there so we got to fish for free which is always a touch!! Decided to perch up right at the end of the pier and run 4/0 pennels in what I can only describe as an uptide rig that someone had shown me (lead runs up and down leader on a slider, then put a bead behind it, then a swivel and then 8-10ft 20lb snood with pennel), Noel was fishing the same on one rod and a pulley rig on his other rod (I couldnt be arsed with using 2 rods)

We started fishing at 6.00pm which was the top of the tide and immediately got into the fish with the first 4 casts each producing whiting and I caught my 4th pout of the yr which was a beast at 1 1/2 lb. The wind dropped of briefly at around 7 which resulted in a lul of fishing where I think we may have had a doggie and a whiting between us. Then at around 9 a weather front moved in, the wind really whipped up and the heavens opened. After a frantic few minutes we were tucked up under the brolly and all was well again, if not a little cramped. I started getting my usual doggie pup a cast and even managed a doggie and a whiting on the same pennel, and noel (by which time had snagged and cracked of 1 of his rods so it was put away) had started to get into some really nice whiting and a few doggie pups himself.

We continued to fish till around 11 at which point the tide has dropped a lot and we had started getting into the snags nigh on everycast so we called it a day and headed home. Good job really because we were 15p short of our parking but the security fella pocketed the cash and let us out!!! (phew) that and my flotation suit was soaked right through that when I sat in the car I noticed that my clothes had started getting wet!

I must have done something bad in a previous life to not have caught a cod(ling) yet this year, Come on god surley I must deserve one by now out of sheer effort lol

Oh well thoroughly enjoyed the trip out, it was like me and Noel had rewound the clock back to our crazy teenage years when we would sit out in the rain for hours and hours just for the sheere hell of getting our trip in and not wasting our bait lol.

Now off to fillet some whiting for tea

Joe

Joe, that's a really interesting report. As I read it I could almost feel the cold wind and stinging rain - it's always good to get back under the brolly once each cast is completed. You seem to have a lot of tenacity; I'm not sure I'd have stayed out so long. But there again, you have the benefit of youth on your side. Make sure you really appreciate it all the while you have it.
Kindest regards. John R.

Cheers John, I intend to enjoy it for as long as I can, although after a few hour under a brolley the knees were already complaining lol. Think I may be asking santa for a new fishing shelter

i understand from all the blurb in the adverts/sales literature, that flotation suits are waterproof.

so how did you get wet ? did you go for a swim ?

I did indeed, hence the brolly was brought out lol, nothing wrong with a bit of rain, saves me washing down my gear

Re: Folkestone Pier 03-11-11

Nice report Joe, well done for sticking it out through the weather. I,m not a fair weather angler by any means but do draw the line at howling gales and to much of the wet stuff.
I,v had so called waterproof floatie suits before that just dont stand up to the elements.
Bought one of those imax smock type jackets from Glasgow angling centre that were posted on here a while back and they are proper water/windproof, a bargain at just over £20. That with a decent set of waterproof trousers and some warm gear underneath does me fine.
Still not that cold down here yet so a hoodie underneath is enough at the mo.
Saved a fortune in heating bills since i left Scotland years ago, but might have to put it on before the end of the month as the temperature is meant to be dropping soon.
Spose i could always go to the pub sit by the coal fire and spend the money i saved on beer lol
