Looking for some advice.

Hello, my name's Maria and I've just moved to Chichester after living in Cornwall for the last five years. I used to go beach fishing with my dad when I was a kid so would love to do the same thing with my lad, who's 4. I've got a rough idea of what kind of gear we'll need but can anyone give me any advice or tips on beach fishing in general.

Cheers.

Re: Looking for some advice.

Hi maria, it`s great you are getting back into the sport and taking the little lad with you now. Im not from your neck of the woods but will try and give ou some basic tips to catch off the beach. Weather is important, if your fishing during the daylight hours (which i assume you are) then you will find it much easier to catch fish after a really big gale. The strong winds will churn up the seabed, dislodging all sorts of food for the fish and also turning the sea a brown colour which means the fish can feed without being seen by other predators. Usually the best gales to fish after are SW direction, not sure why but there is a saying - wind from the east, fish bite least, wind from the west, fish bite best. Also when your down the beach try using a rig called a 3 hook flapper, with size 2 hooks on. You can buy these pre made from a tackle shop. This rig will allow you to put 3 baits close together on the sea bed, creating a scent trail that fish will find hard to ignore and giving you the chance of getting 3 fish each cast. Don`t worry about blasting your bait out miles as many fish are found close to the shoreline. If you get down the beach as the water is coming in look where the shingle meets the sandy sea bed, this is called the gutter and loads of fish will feed along it as it traps food. Simply chuck your bait out roughly where that is once the tide is on it`s way in and you should have some luck,. Also if there are groynes where you fish then try to cast your bait near the end of one as any fish swimming along the beach will have to swim around that point, and your bait will be in the middle of there passageway, increasing your chances of getting them

Hope this helps, anything else just ask and I or the lads will do our best to help you

Tight Lines

Joe

Hi Maria,
Welcome to the forum, A couple of 12 foot beach rods and reels also a stand, your not far from Havant, or Hayling where there are a couple of good tackle shops. I fish in Hayling most of Summer. Their are a load of good lads and ladies on the beach there most of the time, and Im sure Scottish and mental and maybe Gremlin will have one of their famous tutoring days on the beach. Some time soon please... Best of luck

This is attempt number 2 at replying as the last one i just spent 20 mins writing was lost when the internet died on me

This is the slowest time of the year for fishing as you probably know, not in itself a bad thing as it gives you time to collect the gear and learn about marks local to you ( of which there are plenty ) .
I took my 4 yr old ( as she was last year ) with me fishing to Southampton and within 5 minutes she wanted to go to the park so somewhere like South Parade pier ,which is very easy fishing and means you can drop a crab line and eat ice cream too sounds like a good plan
Open beaches in that area will start to improve over the next month or two and the Bass fishing around Chichy harbour can be great ..
What part of Kernow did you move up from ?? great place to fish tho i never fished the top much other than St Ives once .
If you let us know what kit you have/plan on getting/ have no idea about im sure the folk on here can suggest things and then its all about when you want to get out fishing ..
I'm always happy to help less experienced anglers ( even some of the more experienced ones ) and will do my best to get some 'open' days set up on Hayling as soon as the weather allows ( pm on the way Jim )
Welcome to the forum the both of you !
Steve

I hate it when that happens - bloody technology!

I'm interested in your 'open' days/evenings and wouldn't mind coming along to one.

I spoke to a guy at Southern Angling Specialists today and he advised against beach fishing with a kid and recommended starting off with some coarse fishing around Easter time. He made a lot of sense but I would rather be on the beach. I know you said your daughter got bored but my boy's a beach bum so doesn't mind hanging at the beach for hours - in all weathers.

What do you think? Should I bother getting myself kitted out with beach gear or do what the bloke said and fish in still water instead? I'm confused?

Balls to the puddles - stick to the SEA !! its free and full of tasty fish
nothing wrong with fishing somewhere like Hayling with a kid , i'd just avoid the obvious rock marks etc but i assume as a parent you aint daft
Harbours are dead at the minute except for the odd flattie and im not sure about the open beaches ( trying this week ) but id deffo stick to Selsey East beach ( nice and sheltered and easy fishing by the lifeboat pier ) and Hayling island (Eastoke ) ..

Re: Looking for some advice.

Hi Maria and Seth,
My daughters come fishing all the time, the thirteen year old has started to take a lot of interest and the 10 year old just scavenges.
We will organise a day in the middle of summer at eastokes on the beach next to the kids park, could be a good day. I used to live in St Dennis but am a emmit and proud to be.
