| Re: please help, any tips on the essex coast Hi Mud, Much of the Essex coastline is....er....Mud, especially the Thames Estuary so you could do a lot worse than go Flattie fishing. They grow bigger than you think, and some are tasty too. As a general purpose flattie rig try the round part of a white plastic spoon free to rotate stopped about 3 inches up line from a fine wire 1/0 hook and a ragworm bait. Most experts recommend brightly coloured beads after the spoon, but I'm not an expert so this doesn't work for me. I've found that the best places to flattie fish are the deep gulleys that form in muddy bottoms, spot them at low tide (a camera phone is good for this, because I can never remember where they are) and fish as the tide is half way down, the fish seem to lay on the sides of the gulley. The dropping tide seems to concentrate the fish in the gulleys, I've caught three at once before. Use a plain lead and the tide will roll your bait into the gulleys and cover a wider area. You can also catch Stingray from the Estuary, but I've never tried and have no idea how. And there are regular Bass catches from Purfleet too. Hope this helps, best of luck. __________________ Blessed are the Cheese Makers...... |

| Re: please help, any tips on the essex coast there is plenty of good fishing to be had in essex mud, have you tried canvey sea wall behind the thorney bay caravan park? i fish there regulary in the winter and always catch loads of whiting, pouting , dabs and yes codling. biggest i have seen about 8 pounds. if you want to fish a pier best bet is walton in winter and southend in summer. other good marks are fambridge saltings in summer for big bass and roker, i am a new member and will be posting some catch reports as soon as my wife lets me out!!! gonzo |
