Re: what is the best fixed spool reel

Hi ross, depends on your budget really? I would reccomend a Penn Surfmaster 750 or the 850 as a good start, they will cost you around the £50 mark and will last you a long time. You can also take a look at the Diawa Emcast range as I know these reels are also very reliable. I have got a Emcast 5000, its been used frequently from piers and beaches for well over 5yrs now yet not had any problems with her. Not really looked after it either!! It`s been bashed about in my bag, dropped on the floor numerous times and even took a swim yet keeps on going.

Hope this helps

Joe

Re: what is the best fixed spool reel

If you want to spend that much then look at the top end shimano range, they make really good F/S reels but IMO you dont need to spend that much to get a decent reel, F/S are very basic designs and as long as the gears aint plastic and the spools are cone shaped for casting, you cant go far wrong. That said im not sure what bells and whistles you get on the more expensive reels.

Regards

Joe

Re: what is the best fixed spool reel

I won a great MITCHELL 386 f/s reel on ebay - v good nick @ £23.50, works great & is guaranteed rust proof.
Been a few good looking Mitchell sea reels on ebay - a Minter went for around £70 other week.

Re: what is the best fixed spool reel

Hi Ross, there is no need to spend a fortune, the Penn Surfmaster 750's as mentioned by Bluesbro are perfectly adequate. I have had my two for nearly five years and they do not show any signs of wearing out yet and they cast beautifully. In the unlikely event that you should need spares or repairs Penn UK Servicing department are more than ready to help as I found when I bought a broken 750 for spares but then decided to repair it myself and Penn supplied me with the parts in a few days at a very reasonable price. May your rod always be bent, Robs

shimano aerlex are bullet proof, go for the 8000 size but 7000 would do, can be found 2nd hand on fleabay for about £40
