Hello from a newbie to the forum. Any advice on Loch Etive?

Hi all,
I am a holiday sea angler as being based in the Midlands there aint much surf around. I have sea fished for 24 years mainly on the Gower for Bass and flatties with the odd golden grey mullet thrown in for good measure. My wife is Scottish so we're going to Loch Etive after some spurdog around Easter.
Can anyone give me any advice on how to tackle them?
I know it isn't very good form to start off with a request on a forum (i'm on Pike and catfish forums too) so if anyone has any questions about pike or catfish fishing around the Tamworth area in trade pm me.

Cheers!

Mark

Welcome to the forum Mark..which boat are you going out on to target the spurs ?

Heavy mono (150lb) or wire traces are best ,4/0-6/0 hooks ,large fish or squid baits work well

Re: Hello from a newbie to the forum. Any advice on Loch Etive?

Hi Mike,

The wife is planning it as a surprise (that she has shared already!) following watching an item on it on tv with the tagging scheme.
She said something about renting our own boat as opposed to going on a charter (i think a charter may be the way to go though....)
She has done this kind of thing twice before and i owe my two biggest fish to her! We had a great two days skate fishing in Oban and an eventful week in Spain catting...
From what you've said its the same kind of gear for small tope/conger that i've done before. WHat kind of size do they run to?

Cheers

Mark

We get Spurs upto 24lb in the deep channels ,in the Bristol channel ,so i dont see why you wont get em in Oban too ,i supose the average fish here is around 10-16lb..

What was the best skate you boated ? , were you fishing with Ronnie Campbell ?

Re: Hello from a newbie to the forum. Any advice on Loch Etive?

Hi Mike,
Yes it was with (the legend) Ronnie Campbell. It has to be hte best two days of my life! The only time i have not been able to get a wink of sleep before the second day i was so excited.... Blanked on the second day after losing a fish right before wind in but had a cracker of 196lbs the day before. Beat my pb biggest fish (a cat) by 2 lbs!
I'll do some ringing round the tackle shops as i don't think catching bait will go down so will with the other half...
Cheers

Mark
