Casting sinkers Hi, can anyone tell me the best way of melting lead to cast sinkers? I have a ladle that will hold enough lead to cast about four 150 gram sinkers and I have tried my old Epigas camping stove but that does not seem to have enough heat to do the trick, even when I reduce the amount of lead to enough for one sinker. Does anyone know of a suitable stove? May your rods always be bent, Robs

Re: Casting sinkers I've been making leads for both the carp market and sea fishing for quite a few years now and use a calor gas bottle attatched to a head used for melting tar for roofing .. a large stainless steel tea pot ( like the 2 pot ones you get in the cafe - just nab one ) ..at present i can make leads from 1.1 oz ( the legal minimum to make a 'lead' weight right upto 2lb bopedo boat leads .. The amount of lead in the pan isnt important - once you reach the temperature it will all melt pretty rapidly and i used to melt around 3-4 lb of lead at a time .. make sure you have some sort of slotted spoon to take all the crud off the top and always pour into a warm mould .. the first couple of leads are normally rejected and put back into melt.. just out of interest , i started off making leads on the kitchen oven but the smell is a bit overwhelming not to mention the dangerous lead fumes , or the fact it once exploded and covered the roof and walls in molten lead ! I've never been a fan of using a ladle to transfer molten lead - the tea pots suggested have a filter inside and a spout which makes pouring a doddle , plus the added advantage of a lid incase it splatters.. ( i can upload pics if you like ) .. Steve __________________ Shore Species 2012: Dab-Flounder-Herring-L.S.Dogfish-Pouting-Shore Rockling-5 Bearded Rockling-Small Eyed Ray-Turbot-Whiting

Re: Casting sinkers Thanks for the info guys. I have just bought a new Camping Gaz stove that has enough heat to do the job. I used to cast printing metal ingots 50 years ago when I was a mere SNA (snotty nosed apprentice) to keep the typesetting machines running so I know about the safety aspect of casting lead and I have the scars to prove it! Thanks again and keep those rods bent. Rob
