| Frustration ! We live on an island in Norway and have to take a ferry to get to Stavanger, our nearest big town. As I am married, we nearly always arrive 20 seconds too late and miss the ferry so I have made it a habit to keep a telescopic rod in the car to pass the time waiting for the next one. Last week I was spinning for sea trout and for some reason let the spinner sink to the bottom of the harbour wall, when I started to retrieve all hell broke loose - my rod bent double and line was stripped from my reel. After about 10 minutes of playing the fish (which I thought must be a big pollack or even a salmon) I looked round and saw the next ferry coming in, so I thought it's either bully the fish to the surface or lose it and after a lot of pumping and winding I finally got to see the fish - a cod, not the pot bellied dustbin type but fighting fit and full of muscle ! I would guess at 18 - 23lb. There was by now a crowd round me oohing and aahing about the fish when it was time to get out of the way for the ferry docking so I took the line in my hands and tried to lift the fish out - half way up it wriggled and snap, splash, bye bye fish and spinner. Today I came back from town and thought I would try for it again so I dropped in an identical spinner and bang ! contact again ! again after about 10- mins. I saw the fish and lo and behold it had two spinners in its mouth both mine ! To cut a long story short, this time the treble hook snapped and off he went again ! I know where it lives now so next time 30lb line, boat rod and stainless steel pirk.
