Best months are when the mackerel are thick on the ground ie June and July and as for baits there are really only two worth using , fished on a heavy mono trace of between 150 and 250 lb/bs .
a side of fresh mackerel hooked once through the thin end of the fillet will prevent the bait spinning in the tide or if you live near a harbour try whelking out a few silver eels as a 3-4" section of eel is a deadly tope bait.
My best Tope was a female around 45lb caught on a 12/20lb class uptider and SLoSH loaded with 28lb braid.

thanks that helps a lot i thought through the summer time would be the best just trying to get some preperation and get some gear for when the time comes.
