Depends on what casting style you already have, as to the tips we can give you really. Are you doing an overhead thump cast, pendulum, half pendulum or back cast?

I would use a heavier weight tho, i use 6oz but 5oz's are also a good all-rounder! I would go for clipped down rigs either one hook or pennel's with a bait clip, less wind resistance to slow it down as nothing is flapping loose.

This should help a bit.

I personally woulnt bother mate. from experience i know that once you have managed a half decent cast within 5 minutes your mainline,shockleader and trace are gonna be under 5ft of shingle !!
Im dying to get down Abbotsbury but reckon a cold wind from the north might be better than a lumpy sea from southerlies !
