what am i doing wrong!!

im a new seafisher in blackpool, can anyone please give me any advice,ok im a beginner but have been out 5 times now and not had a bite at all(i think)i have caught one floun der,but even that was hooked by the fin,i am using lugworm, have tried going out when its still, when its really rough(lost all my gear)and tried on the beach walking with the tide,im not expecting miracles but thought i may have had a bite by now,ive tried casting far, staying in close, but am unsure if im doing something wrong,or is it not a good time of year to start.

i am really enjoying it but would dearly love to catch even the smallest of fish, any help no matter how small, would be great

thank you all
paul

Re: what am i doing wrong!!

as long as you can cast 30 yds you should be able to catch something distance wise, I'm wondering what rigs your using?? maybe try smaller hooks. Try a 3 hook rig (small hooks) with lug, mackerel & squid as baits. Cast it over the breakers 30-40 yds. try this for an hour, if nothing, try adding another 10-15 yds on the cast and give it another hour. Keep this method going until something gives!

If you have caught nothing with small hooks, three different baits and 30-90 yds of distance then maybe move positions, or go home!

Make sure you don't have anything strange smelling on your hands when fishing, (petrol, aftershave, soap, handcream, etc) this can taint the bait and put fish off, it has to be natural smelling to them.

Hope this helps

Re: what am i doing wrong!!

As Big Fin has pointed out i reckon your best bet is to try a variety of good quality baits ( i've answered a thread similar to this somewhere on here lol ) . Im sure with time you will learn the grounds you are fishing..try going down at low water and look at your normal fishing mark and look for gulleys or anywhere or anything you think might attract fish.
I bet you that with some nice lively fresh ragworm you will see your luck change in no time ! try lug on the bottom hook and rag and a bit of squid on the other.
Best of luck mate,
Steve

Although I am not a very experienced sea angler, I would suggest that you join a local club, bound to folk who'll help you out with advice, location of fish. Comps and open teaching evenings, plus you'll get some great socials.

Re: what am i doing wrong!!

On top of what others have said, I would recommend giving it a go at nighttime, fish come closer to the shore and feed more when its dark and there are also more species around such as whiting

Just make sure you have a decent light or preferably a headtorch!

Oh and ask for tips in your local tackle shops, they are usually happy to help and know the area best
