Salmon on the fly

hey folks, seems i'm the first to post a thread on this subject

Anyway i recently re-joined Inverness AC which allows us three miles of double bank fishing on the River Ness, from the sea up, for Salmon, Sea Trout and Brownies. i managed to snag my first 'fish' of the year a nice plump little 5lb'er. Probably been in the river for a week or so. As it was it good nick i chapped it and had it for dinner last night with some new tatties!

I tried to add a photo but failed miserably.

Back out tonight if the boss lets me!

Re: Salmon on the fly

I'd love to see the picture Richard, that sounds like quite a catch to me...

What's the fight like with Salmon? I presume it's good, but how do they compair with something like a similar sized brownie?

Rich.

Re: Salmon on the fly

Thanks for the info on posting a picture. I am waiting for the photo to be checked by admin before it can be shown and i can use it on a thread.

To be honest Rich i have never landed a brownie over 3lb on the fly. Wild browns over 3lb are not a easy thing to find with a fly rod and in over twenty years of trout fishing the largest i have seen landed on the fly is 5lb. my mate Sandy had one at 8lb but on a pike bait, so comparison to a trout for fighting qualities is quite difficult.

I was using a 16' fly rod with a 10/11 line so the poor wee thing never really stood a chance bearing in mind i've been used to landing 7lb pollack on a heavy trout fly rod when i lived in the north-west.

my biggest Salmon is 22 1/2lb and i've lost much bigger. On two occasions i've played salmon for over half an hour and lost them-sad days

hopefully with just over a month of the season i'll manage a few more salmon
