Help!

Hi,

This is my first thread in the salmon fishing section as I am a fly fisher of
trout. I am hoping that I could get some useful advice. I am very interested in having a go at salmon fishing with the fly. However, I do not have any
experience or knowledge of this discipline, which I hope will play in my advantage as I have no vices nor any misinformed ideas.
Please could you give me any pointers with getting started, i.e., books to read, tackle dealers for my first rod, reel and tackle. I do have a plans regarding tuition for June next year, but I might not be able to wait that long as I am eager. Any advice to help me get started would be very much appreciated.

Thank you, Gareth.

Re: Help!

Hi Gareth, on most rivers the new salmon season doesn`t start until February/March, depending on which part of the UK you fish. Your local tackle dealer should be able to advise you on tackle and flies, but if there`s none near you, have a look at this site.

Re: Help!

Tackle choice will depend on which rivers you intend fishing. On small rivers, a fairly heavy trout rod will do. On big waters, a double handed rod would be better.

Re: Help!

At 6' tall you should be able to handle a double handed rod OK. It will still depend on the size & width of the bit of the Tay you are fishing. You'd be best speaking to your tutor or a local tackle shop.
