| We decided to visit a stretch on the river that we know holds a good head of migratories. It was a 7 mile trek from where we parked, along a 16" trail, through gorse, weeds, nettles, trees and bushes.we arrived about 4.45pm and were welcomed by an almighty splash, right in the middle of the river. I set up with a 9`0" 7/8wt and a Koma reel loaded with a 7wt floater. The fly I chose was a Thunder and Lightening double, a nine foot 8lb leader. Another thunderous splash, heralded another fish further upstream, not far from where one river runs into the other. Casting down and across letting the fly drift into the flow, not that there was a lot of movement in the water. I gave up with the fly, as each cast was taking ages to turn and set up my spinning rod with a sinking devon. I thought my luck was in, but turned out tobe a 3/4lb brownie, on the orange and yellow devon. There were quite a few big fish jumping every now and then, but not at the lures we were using and this continued `til after dark. The walk back in torchlight, was also amazing, unseen animals crashing about in the undergrowth, owls hooting and bats! hundreds of them. Got back to the car, knackered, but elated even though we didn`t land a salmon. ![]() ![]() You can just make out the trail, bottom right of photo. ![]() This is the photo i waited about a 1/2 hour to get. ![]() This is the junction of the two rivers, if you look you`ll see this fish is coloured, so should be returned if caught, I reckon it was about 10 - 12lbs. | Thanks for the comments guys, it was a great session even though the salmon weren`t playing ball. The walk alone was worth it, I should explain that the 7 mile trek, was 3.1/2 mile each way (oops). We tried everything Jeff, flies sub and surface, spinners, lures and worms, the only thing we didn`t try was dynamite (we forgot to bring it ). Most of the fish were well into double figures, but it was great to watch them leaping. The last photo(now my screensaver), I saw the fish in the shallows heading for deeper water and just got the camera out in time. I think with a higher water level and more of a current, we might have got a result. I`m going to upload photos to forum album. Thanks again guys. Peter ![]() Justin when are you putting up your French report? Looking forward to it. P. |
