a trifle breezy

well that was quite a day, after the freezing conditions of last week i was nearly blown away this week
stupid o'clock was the time the alarm went off ( 0300 to be exact ) and i was down on the lake by 4,
the forecast was horrendous, force 5 or 6 south to south westerly and frequent heavy showers
well it was totally the opposite when i got there,it was a lively star lit night with a thin crescent moon providing
very little light, but it was warm and comfy,
i was nicely settled with the kettle on and breakfast cooking by 0400,
i really wonder why i get down the lake so early,i have yet to get a single run in darkness and this morning was
no exception,
my first bit of action came at 0645 when a sharp drop back on my right hand rod resulted in a scrappy 9 3/4 lb fish
which took a whole herring,

soon put back with little fuss ,it then started raining, the first of quite a few sharp showers, at least the wind isn't blowing
thought i,
i then had a dropped run on a popped up scad and then lost a smallish fish close in that took a spinnerbait
back in proper action at 0930 when a single bleep alerted me to my middle rod which was baited with a half mackerel,on looking closer the bobbin was still and the
buzzer silent but the line was moving at a fair speed from right to left, gave it some welly and a very lively pike proceeded to
take a fair bit of line off me before coming under control
this was weighed at 12lb 4oz,a long slender fish which in winter condition would quite easily go 19 or 20

once normal service was resumed i was settling back with a brew up when the same rod again baited with a half mackerel shot off
this gave a very different account of itself,it dived into a weedbed and was pulled unceremonially into the net weedbed and all
this went 9lb 14oz,
the feeding patterns at the lake lately have been a bit strange but one thing that is emerging is that they don't seem to feed
around midday, today was just the same,no matter how i tried i couldn't buy a bite,
i eventually got a fast take at 3 o'clock on a popped up trout under a far bank tree, this again went in and out of weedbeds and was eventualy
landed and weighed at 8 1/2 lb,
it went quiet again,i had already decided to stay into the evening and did get one more run a fish which came off half way in,i didn't see it
but it didn't feel very big.
and that was that, packed up at 7.30.thoroughly soaked through, the wind by now was at least force 7 and i came close a couple of times
to doing a mary poppins across the lake holding on to my brolly

a nice day and at times an uncomfortable day but enjoyable just the same

Nice report/pics Paul, that 12lb 4 certainly is lean!

Well done mate, looks a good session despite the weather.
