jurassic pike - the report

up nice and early this morning 0330 ( WHAT TIME !! ) must be mad .
got down to the lake and all was still, not a ripple on the water not a
bird was stirring,it was lovely, but still it was hot,i walked to my
swim in my shirt sleeves,is this really october ??.

got settled in to a favourite early season swim of mine,( can't get a
bite there after christmas strange ! )
baits were half herring, roach and lamprey and i was nicely settled with
the kettle on by 0500 ,
nothing happened at all during darkness and i had my first interest at
about 8 when an eel made a mess of my herring bait, had some proper
action an hour later when a fast take resulted in a nice little 4
pounder

had a visit from a friend who was fishing further up the lake and he
had only caught one fish in 3 days,so i was doing ok,
he said not many pike are coming out,i reckon they still think its
summer.
during my third brew up i had another eel run, this time i hooked it
only for it to come off 10 yards out,the bait was totally mashed though
it was soon after that i saw a disturbance in the water a couple
of swims up and thinking it was an attacking pike i nipped up there and
started running a spinnerbait through, suddenly all hell broke out,the
disturbance was caused by a cormorant and the bloody thing surfaced
right under my feet and took flight the moment it saw me,i don't know
who was the more frightened to be honest,it happened so quick i
wondered what the **** was going on .
after a calming brew up normality soon returned with a stuttering take
on a roach deadbait , the thud on the other end felt bigger than the
last one,a short but lively fight ended up with a nicely marked 9lb 4oz
pike,i recognised the mark on its flank and records tell me i caught it
2 years ago at 5lb,so its doing ok.

and that was all that happened,no matter how hard i tried i just could
not get any more interest,
its interesting though,of all the pike caught today, none were caught on
sea dead baits, all on roach or rudd,i wonder if its due to the
weather,we certainly need a cold snap so we can start some proper
piking.
