Red face Lure fishing for pike today

Lure fishing for pike - Well having to remind myself that I was on holiday I decided to get out of the house and do some pike fishing

Not knowing the states of the rivers or lakes around me I decided to go on a scouting mission but armed with some lures

First stop was the river Avon above Tewkesbury that I know holds some nice pike and zander but on arriving the river was high and chocolate brown so would be a waste of time plugging it

Second stop was to a lake I know that has plenty of jack pike in it with the odd one to 15lb , but you have to drive over three fields to get to the lake and there was just no way my car was build for the mud so a little dishearten I made my way to a flood drain not far from the lake

The flood drain is about 30 ft across and goes to about 4ft in normal conditions but as its winter it was holding flood water

THe drain does contain a lot of silver fish that end up there when the river severn bursts its bank and is never fished as you have to know the farmer to get to it . It does hold pike but never had anything of size and I only go here if I cannot fish anywhere else

The tackle for the day was my Abu bait caster on a maxxuims boat rod - Yes that right but the thing is the maxxiums is pencil thin and just makes a great little baitcaster rod

THe water was cloudy with vis at about only two foot and with forgetting to pack my rattler lures ( lures with beads in them ) I did not hold out much hope of getting any pike . But hay I was scouting so no great problem there

Started of using a variety of soft bodied storm lures that have great action in the water and normally any pike that sees them will hit the lures hard

After about half a mile I had not had one bump so with me cursing myself for not having any rattlers I switch to the good old dexter wedge that never fail me when times are hard

I worked the rest of the mile , changed depth speed but still no luck , and boy was my hands getting numb

So no pike but had a great walk and scout and feel much better for getting out . Is this the way things are going to be for 2006 again ?

One thing I would say if your gut instinct says get smelly deadbait and trot a float down whilst scouting a stretch off water then go with it

Oh sorry pics are pants but these cheap £50 dig cameras arent great

Not to worry Richard, you could have made a 150 mile round trip for Cod fishing and blanked!!

But nice report and hey lakes are ok to fish around this way at the mo.

Re: Lure fishing for pike today

There is one phrase that springs to mind in situations like these (god knows i've told myself it enough times!!) and that is "if it was called catching and not fishing it there would be no fun in it".

Sometimes it's just enough to be out 'doing' and not 'dreaming' ,allright so you never caught this time but theres always the next and the next and so on.........

Better luck next time Richard, tight lines mate,
