72 lb pike.......or not?

During my travels through the net on my favourite subject of pike and historical specimen catches (my own pb is now 28 lb) i have come across a couple of outstanding specimens, in fact its fish we could now only dream of!!

The first of the amazing pike was a 72 ,yes thats 72 lb pike taken from loch Ken in 1874 now if a fish of that calibre was landed today it would shake the very foundations of the predator scene and would obviously go to the top of the list in the rod caught fish commitee records. Truly amazing, but how acurate the weighing procedure and ratification process was we can only guess at although personally i do believe a pike could reach these monsterous proportions under the perfect conditions, and anyway if an unscrupulous angler was going to lie about a catch he might add a couple of pounds....not another 30 odd eh !!

This is not just blind faith either because as a fanatical piker myself i know that like minded persons do deep down dream of fish this size. At the river Ettrick i think it was there was also the skull of a pike found that is still on display in some museum or other and this fish was also in the same size bracket of between 70-80 lb........now that is just awe-inspiring is it not??
I'm sorry that the info on the Ettrick skull is a bit vague but if your interested you could source it yourself.

My club water (Edgelaw res.) has a good head of pike in it ,the biggest pike out of it being 32 but the average stamp would be about 5-8 lb ,now its a VERY deep water for its size (180-200ft) in places and there is a massive head of roach, perch and wild brownies so when i'm in the middle of a long session and my mind begins to wander i like to think of these storys and who knows the next bite could just maybe be an 80 lb super essox !! LMAO !! Nah, i would be over the moon with beating my pb like any piker or angler for that matter.

Tight traces everyone !!

Re: 72 lb pike.......or not?

I will 2nd the big pike sotry, saw a program about it acouple of years back, apparently it wasnt caught on rod and line though
apparently 2 people staggered out of the pub after a heavy nights drinking to row home and saw this thing splashing about in the shallows and went and beat it with oars and took it home, might not have been a 72lb pike but it was F**KING huge how ever big it was, they wouldnt have made a whole program about it if it wasnt huge

Re: 72 lb pike.......or not?

Yeah Ben i thought that no-one could exaggerate a fishy story that much, now i know that us anglers are well known for the 'it was t-h-i-s big' storys but i new that say a 30 lb pike couldnt grow to 70 odd by the time these guys reached the boozer...!! LOL !

Cheers mate......Mikey !
