Exclamation Catch report good news and bad (political)

Went to the private stretch of the wensum today and altogether had 39pounds of pike 3 good doubles But going back to the heated dicussion on politics a man came and took one of the pike and killed it

It took all of my self restraint not to punch him the reason i let him was because the land owner said he could and its the norfolk way not the i mock this at all but it realy upset me he sat there punching this poor creature for atleast 30 seconds and i had to walk away can anyone help me????

Ummm
Its a tricky one but cant see much wrong with it as long as he killed it quickly and eats it.
If he did beat it around the head for as long as you say them he s out of order.

Re: Catch report good news and bad (political)

why do you not go up to the land owner and let him know you are not happy with your capture being taken away to be eaten and try and explain you do it cause you love the sport .
you said that there was a very big pike from this area last year of 28lb or so so if next time you are there and you capture this you are going to allow him to take it away and kill it ??
my advice is if you do not want this to happen while you are there
DO NOT FISH IT !
other wise you have to confront the land owner and try and educate him you do for sport and not for the pot
if you have a problem with confrontation with him i suggest you contact
mr charlie bettel (he has his own guiding service and has his own website) with your situation and he will gladly go and talk to the land owner on your behalf

regards
kev

my own decision would be not to go and fish it as i,m not catching fish for his pot or any one elses

Re: Catch report good news and bad (political)

as i'm a sea fisherman i do take a very few of the commoner species from the sea so can understand wanting to take something home to eat. but i've been educated not to take pike and am quiet happy to release them after they've given the fight that i went for.

i suppose if there is a lot of pike there then a few people could take the fish if given permission. however if everyone took a fish everytime they went then the waters would get a shortage of fish (like the sea).

fair play to him for killing the fish quickly and properly, and not just letting it gasp for hours.

Re: Catch report good news and bad (political)

I would have handled this probably not as well as you.......i hate the thought of any pike being being killed un-nescisarilly for any reason! I mean even if he was the land owner what was to stop him going and catching himself one for the table? He must be a bit of a prick if he just took your catch from you and as i said before i wouldn't have had your restrint and would probably have knocked him in the river using my foot !!!!

If i was you i would stop fishing his stretch of the river as i take it you pay him for the privelage.;.......no excuse for killing one of natures perfect predators for nothing and from what i've been told they're not that tasty anyway, full of bones apparently. BLOODY IDIOT !!

Re: Catch report good news and bad (political)

Very emotive subject, my view is that big pike should be returned, but as someone who eats the odd seafish & trout, I cannot crititcise anyone who takes a small jackpike for the pot. Some waters definately have too many small pike & removing a few won,t make a difference. What worries me is the attitude of a lot of the eastern europeans that are coming to work over here. many of them want to eat everything they catch regardless of size. I watched Mat Hayes fishing programme on Discovery channel the other day. He spent about 3 days fishing in Poland & only caught one 6" jackpike!!! The waters there are empty. Mind you I think if you want a fish for the pot, you should catch it yourself.
