Question Big Pike In Summer ??

I would like to know what everyone thinks about big pike hunting in the summer months. I myself (a fanatical piker!) believe it is ok as long as your catches are un-hooked quickly and in the water and that any handling and pictures are kept to a minimum. In the winter when pike have more weight on them and the water is more oxygenated and cooler you can affored to admire your catch more and take a bit more time over un-hooking etc but i still like to get them returned quickly with little fuss.
I would not, however, dismiss it as entirely as Des taylor (Angling Times July 5th ) who calls pikers who fish in the summer "so called pike conservationists" --- I dont know what do you guys think ???

Re: Big Pike In Summer ??

I think piking during the summer is fine . OK there is more bait food around but its a great way of spending a summers evening stalking pike

Re: Big Pike In Summer ??

I dont know many english waters ekcept graffham water and windermere! I like fishing reservoirs, lochs and lakes for pike rather than rivers though, my p.b of 28 pound was took from loch lomond----- a cracker !!!

Re: Big Pike In Summer ??

there is nothing wrong with piking in the summer in my opinion, as mikey said if you put the fish back in quick enough it aint a problem, and all good fisherman should be able to do this.
pike fishing is the greatest type of freshwater sport fishing for me (and many others).
I go pike fishing all year round, it is true that pike are bigger later in the year and you can keep em out of the water longer BUT a 28 in the winter is maybe a 25 in the summer and i dont know of any pike fisherman that would not be over the moon with a 25.
