I'm new to pike fishing

Hey guys/gals. I am new to these boards.. I am glad that i found it.. a lot of good info.. Well ever since my brother used my nice graphite fishing rod and he used this spinner bait (I think) it has a small head of a fish with a blade before that and it has a treble hook. well in our secret spot here in michigan, my bro saw a pike and put that spinner close to it and got pissed took it and Swam fast, bro didnt have time to set the drag, the pole snaped in half and then broke the line.. this was a 5 foot or more pike..

I am just wouldering what lures are good for Pike.. I have many diffrent styles of Mepps #5 lures that are dressed with tails and the tails all are diffrent colors and i also have wild eyed baby lure swimming lures. Will these work or what do i need? I am also a live Bait person. I dont see the diffrence between useing a live fish as bait and then hooking a bigger fish.

Thanks for anyhelp

Ross

Hi Ross

Personally, I think any lure/spinner/spoon/crankbait/spinnerbait/fly etc.. will work if it's put in front of a hungry pike! They won't really leave an "easy" meal in my opinion

Re: I'm new to pike fishing

I have 5 diffrent Mepps #5's the blades are diffrent than each other, and i also have the Mepps Piker Kit that is dressed with tails and it has 2 syclops #2's with it. and a Nicholas white spinner bait (I think thats what its called, its got a white tail and a large hook, and 2 blades on it.. These should work fine right? I also use 14" steel leaders. Should i get a stronger pole or is the Rhino Graphite core glass wrapped poles ok? and what color lures should i use for a brownish water. i guess theres a lot of clay deposits in this lake.

Thanks

Ross

Re: I'm new to pike fishing

Hi Ross.

I don't really do much pike fishing, but I know Mepps spinners work well, they're also good for perch if you get them over there? Your steel (wire) trace should be fine. Get catching

ChaosinDevon will become famous soon enough
Re: I'm new to pike fishing

I use a Rapalla macky lookalike......... works everytime..... works so well I look for lures that dont just for a change.
I use a 6" steel leader, the lure is about 7 to 8 inches long two trebles on it and something in it that rattles.
