| 1st day out piking in about 6 years! well, as the title says, i went out on my first piking trip in many years, chosen location Fiddleford mill, Sturminster newton, river Stour. cloudy day with some rain in the air and we arrived at dawn. a smallish weir with lush vegetation and slow flow. 4 rods out between 2 anglers, 2 on bottom dead baits and 2 on float dead baits. between us we had 5 or 6 runs but they only resulted with 1 fish on the bank. i lost a PB pike on float fished roach which screamed off at high speed taking line from my reel (dam knot gave way! pah!). anyways, here's the pick of me with my pike: ![]() __________________ www.riverswayonline.co.uk |

i've been a keen angler for 23 years, and have also used the same 5 1/1 turn blood knots throughout. just unlucky me thinks. __________________ www.riverswayonline.co.uk |

| Re: 1st day out piking in about 6 years! have you ever tried a grinner? That's a knot that is much less prone to slipping than a simple blood. Good luck anyway :) |

| Re: 1st day out piking in about 6 years! Nice report, and picture. shame about the lost PB, bad luck. Like Bungz said try the Grinner knot (Richard Walker named it after his sons knickname 'Grinner'), not only is it a safer knot but it doesn't put so much stress on the line at the knot, and after a little practice is just as simple to tie. Best of luck next time, at least you had a nice pike anyway ![]() __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |
