| Pike fishing with a dead bait One of the waters I fish has a good head of Rudd and Roach an that's all i've fished for there in the past. It's not the biggest of venues and the good thing is i'm always on my own when i'm there. There are often walkers that pass by an whenever there is anyone who stops for a quick chat they often say that there are a few pike in there. Not too big, around the 4-5lb mark. The people i've spoken to seem really nice and I have no reason to doubt them. A pike would certainly thrive in this small pool with the amount of prey fish around. A friend also told me that he used to catch good sized Crucian carp which I also took with a pinch of salt until this weekend when my mate caught a cracking Crucian just shy of 2lb. There was a dead perch in the margin which seemed pretty fresh, an I had a 2 treble pike trace in my box which i'd bought one time so thought I would give it a go for a pike. I used the biggest float I had in my box which was a Premier Pellet Waggler No.3 - 8gr which seemed to take the weight of the small perch. I tried fishing it on and just off bottom but unfortunately no takes. There may or may not be pike in this pool I don't know but i'm gonna have a few go's at catching me one, now i've never caught or even fished for pike before so any tips that anyone can give would be appreciated, especially regards rig setup etc. One problem I had was the perch seemed to bend with the tension of the treble rig, so I wasn't getting 10/10 for presentation. I have a few lures that I might also give a go, I have loads of spinners and spoons in all different colours. An a few plugs which i'm keen to try as they really look the part. The pool has some good over-hanging trees but the water seems quite shallow and weedy around them. There is also several weed beds and open areas to try. |
