| Another go down the canal Decided on a last minute lure fishing stint at Exeter canal, before the weed finally takes over for the summer, as each time I visit there is less and less clear areas of water, and more and more weed. My son and I had an early start, via McDonalds for some McMuffin breakfast, and then onto the lime kilns area of the canal. The day was overcast, with a light breeze - seemed good conditions. We both started off using Savage Soft 4 Plays, and as luck would have it Aaron had a small feisty jack at the 2nd swim he tried. Unfortunately the rest of the day was hard going and not as productive as my recent trip to the canal. After about an hour and a half, Aaron realised he had left his fags back at the car, so wandered back up the canal to get them. Meanwhile I hooked and landed a jack which grabbed my lure as I lifted it from the water, and then took off on a tailwalking display before giving up and coming to the net. As Aaron was down by the car, I took a quick photo of it on the unhooking mat. On returning from the car (and disbelieving I had caught a pike while he was away - until I showed him my photographic proof) Aaron decided to change to a surface lure. About half an hour afterwards I had a shout from Aaron, and sure enough he was bringing a jack into the margin, that had followed his surface lure for several yards before taking it. I then hooked and lost a decent pike - it had 2 goes at the lure as well, and after a quick head shake got off, but it looked into double figures. Maybe next time. We jumped in the car and headed off to the Turf stretch of the canal. The wind picked up a bit on this stretch of the canal, and we also had a bit of drizzle/rain, which was nice as until then it had been a very hot, humid day (my polaroids keep steaming up !!) We ended up with a couple of more pike from that stretch., nothing huge, but fun all the same. A couple of lagers and plate of chips from the Turf pub recharged our batteries for the jaunt back to the car.
