| Piking from the 'Tube' Hello all, As most of you know i own a float tube, which you probably think I'm nuts for, but trust me they are great fun! As always on a wednesday i get out of school at 1 for 'home study' or as i like to call it a fishing pass . The weather had been bright all week but calm which is good for the tube seeing as i havent been on it since the summer i was hoping for a calm day to break myself back in. It's usually our rule not to go out if the winds are greater than 15 mph-ish... Let's just say today the weather had changed a little and winds were maybe reaching 30mph on the gust. We still went out as we were confident on being able to fish safely enough in the conditions we were presented with. The lake we headed to wasnt my usual haunt but one that i started my piking on years ago and produces some nice fish still and best of all is hardly fished at all. The lake in the summer is thick with weed so now isnt a bad time to get a few fish out of it while the weeds are only beginning to think of growing again. ![]() My chosen tactics were trolling around a float fished roach a about 3ft depth, which is ample for this lake as it averages around 5ft deep. My tubing partner opted for trying to tempt them with the fly which was easier said than done and required a great deal of skill in the blustery conditions. On the first trip around the lake i had one take on my roach deadbait but ended up missing the take and john failed to tempt anything. On the second trip we managed to land a pike, which was a joint effort! He hooked it on the fly, steered it towards me and i landed it for him after a very acrobatic fight. It was only about 2lb and like all fish i have caught from the lake, it was a very dark colour. This in my opinion is to do with the lake being surrounded in peat bogs which colours the lake a sort of dark brown colour. ![]() We must have had about 5 trips around the lake with out any more action so we spilt up and adopted different tactics, i went for a surface lure as the shallow waters were ideal. John went for a floating fly as opposed to the diving one he was using. He had a number of follows as did i but to no avail. The wind picked up even more and that was a good indicator that enough was enough. So we headed back to the bank for 6pm, both very happy to get an afternoon on the tubes! There was white water breaking by the time we were heading home, i tried to snap some photos of it but wasnt really great on my phone's camera. ![]() ![]() I tried to get a short video to give you all a sample of the 'tubing experience', im not sure how it will come out but here goes! Its not the most polished report in the world, but its all i have time for with my 'busy' school schedule! ![]() Cheers Justin __________________ Blackwater Tackle Supplies Keep Ulster's Waters Healthy, Practice Catch and Release! |
