Anyone used the 'Shoal Rig' for Pike?

When I used to go Piking in the late 70s a friend and I used to experiment with what we called a ‘Shoal rig’ where we used to hair rig several small fish (and I mean 2” to 3” fish) through their lips on a single hair and have another small fish lip-hooked to a large single hook. In the water It looked a bit like a small shoal of fish having a go at something.

We had some good results when we used it at Burfield Pits near Reading. However we didn’t percivere with it.

I just wondered if anyone else had used a rig similar to this for Pike?.

I like the sound of it, i haven't heard of anything similar really.

Did you use live bait fish?

Re: Anyone used the 'Shoal Rig' for Pike?

They were live fish that we managed to catch in one of our landing nets and because they were a bit small we decided to experiment with the idea of a tiny shoal to see if we could still get takes, and we were pleasantly surprised that it worked and we both had Pike on the rig.

Back in the late 70s we were not die hard Pike anglers and didn't percivere with it but my son asked me to go piking with him the other day and I remembered the 'shoal rig' that we tried back in the late 70s and I wondered if anyone else had tried it.

Re: Anyone used the 'Shoal Rig' for Pike?

I'm going to give it a go, although i might have bother getting the small fish , in the summer i walk up my local river with a landing net and catch small roach for eel baits, I will do that and pick out the smaller ones and use them in the rig! It'll be very interesting.

Around June in my lake the pike send large shoals of fry scattering all over the place, so a nicely positioned float with your 'shoal rig' should go down nicely adjacent to a reed bed!

Cheers for the tip.

That's an excellent idea. I bet that's a great summer rig when lots of small baitfish are around.

Will give that a try, nice one.

Don't some of the marlin lures represent a shoal with one main target in it ? If not it's a cracking idea.
