The use of Pike Gags

Hi all :)

Done nothing but winter pike fishing back in the late 80's early 90's.
Back then the use of pike gags was very common, I personally, refused to even keep one in my tackle box, they looked like, "were" a barbaric form of torture tool for fish
Imagine my delight when walking into my local tackle shop back in the 90's and the shop owner saying, "Pike Gags have now been banned".. :)
Their use stopped, and I have not seen any since..(bare in mind, not pike fished now for 18-19 years).....

So, I have now taken up pike fishing again, and looking around lots of tackle shops, I am coming across "Pike Gags" again called now the "HUMANE PIKE GAG"
with rubber stops at the ends, instead of the two sharp steel points (that dug into the fishes top and bottom jaw).
So....Has the ban now been lifted on these pike gags (not that I will EVER use one)...I can still see some inexperienced angler doing much harm to the pike using tools of this nature

What do you guy's think about "Pike gags" humane or not? whats YOUR thoughts?

Tight lines
Swifty.... :)

never thought they were banned in the first place ,

I would rather some one used one ,if the consequences were a deep hook treble being left in the fish

Re: The use of Pike Gags

There is no need to use a pike gag. If they are not banned they should be. If done correctly Pike are easy to unhook. The bigger the pike the easier it is.

Maybe a vid should be added to the pike section showing how to unhook a pike correctly

Re: The use of Pike Gags

Agree with darrell on this one there is no need to use one for unhooking pike especially with barbless hooks

Re: The use of Pike Gags

Its coming back now if i remember rightly i read somewhere that the PAC arrived at a voluntary agreement with the tackle trade that gags would no longer be available, but it never became a law ,that is why some of the unscrupulous tackle shops kept selling them , and still do it seems , never seen one of these new ones ,there are plenty of good forceps and long nose pliers available , The PAC are totally against the use of gags
http://www.pacgb.co.uk/aboutpac/conduct.html

many items of yesteryear should be outlawed some are , but are these any worse than some one dragging a fish up a pier wall

Personally i think the last time i saw one of these was in Mr Crabtree goes fishing

How it should be done

seems its only the cheap wholesale tackle shops that are marketing these +evil bay

does any one have a link to these new ones

Re: The use of Pike Gags

Hello :)

Here is what a new pike gag looks like:
http://www.fishnorthdevon.com/fishin...uipment=840087
Can't find an old one...But there is not much difference to what was around 25 years back, being added, the "T" bar with rubber grommets....Old ones had no "T" bar...ends were flattened bent out at right angles with a "V" cut.....That was just one of the problems, the other being STILL there with the NEW "Pike gags"....Which is, Anglers were using gags...on "ALL" size pike even small jacks....the gags are very tight coiled steel, which when sprung open, inside a pikes jaws would in fact rip open and tear the jaws apart on a small fish.
So there seems no difference between old and new....the design is still the same

Re: The use of Pike Gags

this is a tricky one and think im in danger of coming across a bit pompous or sanctamonius,
really im not, fish with me and id like to think you would find me the oppsosite,
unhooking a pike is pretty easy but cant be learnt in a book, its somthing that has to be
shown. the gist of it is, you use a wet hand and slip it under the gill plate being
very carful not to damage the gills lift the fish slightly and the mouth with just pop
open then you can get in ther with your long artery forceps, ive suffered a few cuts and scratches
but a butcher mate of mine gave me an old chainmail glove for my right hand! tried builder gloves gut
they just get snagged up (gloves never on the hand your gilling the fish with EVER)
Also if wobbling or dead baiting ill crush all barbs except the ones in the actual bait,
hookpoint gose right through the bait then ill crush it and secure with a section of elastic band over the point.
cant stress this enough pike look as mean as hell but much like audley harrison ther wimps one the mat,
get em back in asap. and please if you havnt done it before find a pike angler to show you and
maybe give you a go!
thers no shame init and any piker worth his salt would welcome it! id be happy to anyway

Re: The use of Pike Gags

Thanks Geffski for sharing with us some of your experience and knowledge :) Although I am new here, you certainly don't come across as ether pompous or sanctimonious, :) Fishing for me has always been about (not just catching fish) teaching/learning and knowledge, that if we all share what we learn, it helps keep fish safe and the sport alive....and also helps keep barbaric tools like the "Pike Gag" out of tackle boxes...As Nick so rightly put it..."Its the uneducated angler that is the problem"
Would still like to hear from somebody who has used one....Don;t be scared we won't flame you....:)
