well baz put up a shout that the canal was clearish of weed, and i have been itching to go for ages but not found any time, and that surface lures worth a try( never done this and sounded good)

well after a quick visit to tackle shop in afternoon to pick up a surface lure or 2



it was off to the stretch by the boathouse,
it looked lovely despite the low cloud


it was never going to be a long session as didnt get there till 7 , and of cause the rain started at 7.01 deep joy

anyway a few casts in first spot and nothing
so next spot and after 2nd or 3rd cast saw a big shape follow, so sent it off again, this time a splash but i pulled the lure away, patience i told myself

next cast and i retrieved over the same spot really slow and whallop what a sight as a big head came out the water and hit the lure right at my feet , a short fight later and a lovely 7-8lb fish( wouldnt keep still to weigh in net) is in the net



it probably fought more in net than water

next few swims nothing , then had and lost a small jack that again had a good look at lure before takeing on 3rd attempt, its adrenaline pumping stuff watching that shape follow, absolutely brilliant i loved it

unfortunately had to give up at 8 as almost to dark to see( let alone unhook a pike without a headtorch) , but had a cracking sunset over exeter that made it look like it was on fire


a great evening, and i have a feeling i will be back there after work very very soon for a longer session

Nice one Dave - surface lures are great fun especially when they take the lure at your feet - that stretch from the boathouse does seem productive. Now you have made me want to get down there again soon

Well done Dave, With out a doubt the best way to lure fish for pike! My biggest pike on a lure was off the surface and its a real heart stopper when you see the lure getting engulfed by any pike, but especially by a twenty. Perfect time of year now for a bit of surface fishing aswell. I bought a lovely frog surface lure in France over the summer, haven't been able to use it yet but i really am itching too!

I find if a water you are fishing has clouded up alot and pike are not responding to spoons, plugs etc then a change to a surface lure can make all the difference with the disturbance it makes. Just a small tip

well i had to go back today

but not as good a result, it was blowing a hooley from the NW which means right down the canal, so casting upstream was almost impossible
the water was gin clear and very sunny
but as a plus
i did have a pb perch( although had to guess arround 1 1/2 lb, ( old pb 1lb) as too windy to weigh in net)


and as i walked all the way up to the double locks it was rude not too ehh

Well done again Dave...after inspiring you to try surface lures, that pint should be mine lol! At least I had the willpower to walk past the pub the other day, although it was mighty difficult I can tell you. Next time though I am def gonna have a pint, and recharge my batteries!..

Great result Dave, that perch is an absolute peach of a fish. We`re going down our local canal next week, looking forward to it even more now. Excellent fish, well done.
