Will this set-up do?? Hi all, im very much a newbie, so be gentle!! im a carp man myself and have just started fishing for pike in my local res which has pike up to about 27lb (well thats the record on the res!) I gave spinning/lure a go up there and have caught some small jacks, I would now like to try deadbaiting I plan on using the following set-up and this is what I need some advice on - firstly can I use either my whichwood agitator lure rod (60-100gram casting weight) or my quiver tip feeder rod? I have always fished for carp on the quiver so its the only rod/s I own ;-( so could I in theory fish the same way as I do for carp with the quiver? or am I going to have to buy a deadbait rod/carp rod???? the next question is - I plan on using a fixed spool/rear drag reel (I dont own a baitrunner reel) and simply set the clutch to allow for a run, this will be spooled with 25lb fine diamitor braid, with an inline fox lead a bead then tied to 18 inches of wire trace down to 2 treble hooks with my chosen deadbait on, hence ledgering as i do for carp (although I use 15lb mono for carp) I would then watch my quiver as I do for carp to inform me of a run etc, if I cant do this and need to buy a deadbait/carp rod I plan on using the method above but with a drop off indicator?? (no alarm) so this is what I plan on doing???? any thoughts guys??? Thanks soooo much for your time!! Matt.

Re: Will this set-up do?? Hi I have caught Pike on a quiver tip rod while fishing with hair rigged small sections of Rudd, I was targeting the Zander. I would not advise using a quiver tip targeting Pike, if you hook a decent Pike you will struggle to control it, also putting the Pike through a long stressful fight I would purchase a Pike/Carp rod with a test curve to match the bait size you intend to use. Test curve depends on what distance etc... You intend to cast Bait runners are not essential; an open bail arm with a drop off indicator will be ok. Use the fox running rings instead of the in line weights, you will reduce the amount of dropped runs. Trace length, I think 18" is a bit short, 24" is what I would use but strike as soon as you have a run to avoid deep hooking, you may miss a few runs but it saves putting the Pike at risk I am sure you will get some more/better advice from more experienced members Good luck Darrell

Re: Will this set-up do?? good advice from darrell , dont bother with quiver tips, it can be a waiting game pike fishing, you would be better off buying a good pike or carp rod with a test curve of 2 1/2 lb or over, you need a rod with a bit of beef to cast out deadbaits ,

Re: Will this set-up do?? Hi Guys and thanks sooo much for the reply's! I have had a look at the fox line clips and they seem to have mixed reviews, main one being they can 'ping' off on the stike/take and quite often ebd up in the swim! ive also never used em am I right in thinking you clip it to your rod very close to your reel, once cast and settled you clip it to the clip hence the clip keeps tension on your line , then you leave the bail arm off?? thats how I seem to read it ;-) also I guess I wold have to quickley learn when stricking that I dont end up with a birds nest etc!! ;-( also will the clip hold the line tight enough? there are also diff sizes but I guess if im gona go out and buy a new pike/carp rod Im not gona be sure of the MM untill I get one, what rod would you guys surgest please??? you can dead bait on my local stretch of canal (which is included in my local club membership) the club im attached to has soooo many rules you wouldent belive so I was surprised you can to be honest lol, the other place is one large res, so I guess what im saying is on the canal I would hardly need to cast, but on the res I would prob be casting a fair old distance, depending on where I think the pikeys are lol, the rod would need to be braid freindly obviously ;-)) oh and the other thing!! as you can see in my OP would the whichwood lure rod be ok for the canal part of my deadbaiting plans?? so deadbait rod or carp rod, I guess that is the question ;-)) It would be great to hear ppl's views on the clips too! Thanks so much for being hospitable guys!!!! Matthew.

Re: Will this set-up do?? just use a elastic band on your spool , loop the line under it , the line will pull out when you get a run

Re: Will this set-up do?? I use the fox micro or is it mini swingers?? attached to the rear rod rest instead of the front. The swinger has a weight that can be altered as well as an adjustable line clip that is far better than the fox drop offs, no way it will ping off the rod rest The birds nest are related to using bait runners when striking without disengaging the free spool, if you use a standard fix spool reel you wont suffer from this problem as long a you have closed the bail arm As for rods, your lure rod is not adequate, a 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 TC rod will do. I use two Korum and one daiwa rod at the moment but I mainly target Zander so the rods I use are through action rods which are forgiving. you will require a rod with a bit of back bone but has a forgiving top third to cast bigger baits weather it is on the canal or reservoir, sorry cant remember what the correct name is for the rod action. I am sure there is a thread that covers the differences in rod actions If the venues you fish hold good Pike I am sure you will bump into some local anglers targeting them, have a chat and you will learn more that way, as long as you dont meet a beginner lol Darrell

Re: Will this set-up do?? Hey headless, the res im thinking of fishing for pike in has decent pike, record is 27lb (might be small to you lol) as for the fishermen up there they are all ANTI-PIKE the place has huge bream and very decent roach etc and most go fishing for these, when I went up last weekend there was a guy moaning that the pike kept nicking his roach on the way in as he got to the margins, (they did as I saw it happen twice, and man was it fun seeing that!) he then remarked 'there are more pike in the trees over there than in the water' I dident take too kindly to his comment but hey, I wasent about to get in to an argument ;-( the pike thiefs looked like decent jacks on that day anyway! so no I get the feeling they aint keen on the most beautiful fish that are pike ;-(
