| Re: Will this set-up do?? Thanks guys, about an hor ago i did attemp to pull the fish apart but they frozen solid, im guessing i cant let them thaw slightly as to pull them apart, looks like il have to take the pack ;-((( how often is acceptable to change the hook bait? it mentiones when its washed out on the pack , what the chuff does that mean! also do I cut the lampry frozen once I get there? or when its thawed?? surley if its thawed and i pull it out the box and chop the bugger in half, it will piss blood everwhere and be almost drained by the time it hits the water, the sprat i biught seem quite small ( when i look at my size 6 trebles compared to the fish ) i guess i will go tesco and see what suitable fish they have for the job and the cost of em, makerel of course, maybe some trout, think its gona be expensive this pike lark lol, but thats cool so long as i catch one ha!!! would be a pisser to run out of bait so i guess im gona take what i think, im hoping i dont loose any on the cast!!!!! 2 quid a cast will get very expensive!! | Re: Will this set-up do?? Hi Guys, just a quickie!!! Ive decided to buy a shimano 6000 baitrunner as it was a steal at just 33 quid ;-) anyway ive looked on u tube etc as how to set them and all that and now feel confident, so now it comes to the braid!! ive had enough of researching and heard all about the 'digging in on retrive' 'nests' etc etc, a couple of good articles stating to have your clutch set alot slacker than if fishing mono etc and alsao this helps prevent the braid digging in, anyway from what i gather i could do with quite a thicker braid as this helps, lets say 0.28, spool up as tight as poss and dont overfill the spool or should i say dont put as much on as i do with momo and all should be well, so guys ive looked at 50 million chuffing braids, some like the berkley looks awsome but christ!! such a small DIA !! 0.06??? i would need 100 quid to fill my spool lol!! anyway thats by the by as i dont want it that thin, so what do you guys surgest?? and im looking for a name etc here ;-) any advice on if the above is correct and which chuufin braid to buy?? thankyou!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hi Matt, personally i'd advise buying a couple of pike rods instead of using carp rods or quiver rods. Both of the mentioned rods are made for a specific purpose. You could get away with 2.75t'c carp rods but i cetaainly wouldn't advise it - the playing action and back bone of the carp rods wont be the same as a pike rod. I used carp rods when first starting out pike fishing but found the action a little too soft, even for the small drains i fish - if you try this first and then try pike rods you'll notice the difference! Gear for me is simple - 2 x shimano Baitrunners (6000 GTE) 3 x fox deadbait pike rods 2 x 3lb,1 x 2.75lb t/c's Rig wise i use pencil floats or small fox ball floats depending on the tow, with a running lead on a run ring. I personally use 3lb rods most of the time as im chucking big baits but i also have a 2.75 rod for small baits like roach, sprats, fish sections etc. I use fox microns on the front rests, mainly to alert me if im doing something and not looking at my rods - such as re-casting a rod,re-baiting,playing a fish etc etc. I also use a swinger with each alarm - (a solar with plastic line clip) just to keep lines tightish and sunk. I cant comment on the drop back indicators as i haven't used them, only the for drop aff alarms which i didn't like. As for wire traces and treble set-ups(snap tackle),i make these myself. I prefer to make both the traces 24" as this provides plenty of safety to the fish. I cant comment on the braid as i dont use it and probaly never will - mono suits me fine. I have used braid when feeder fishing but dont like the idea when piking - nothing wrong with braid, its just my preference! Have a look on auction sites for rods and reels - i picked my fox pike rods up for next to nothing. If your not using big baits and chucking long distances then 2.75lb should be adequate for your needs! You could get away with fixed spool reels but baitrunners would be better - your straight into the fish and dont have to mess about tightening up your drag. This insures that you get the fish in quicker and return them quicker! Again i got my reels off an auction site.... i can highly recommend the Daiwa Regal 4050- crackling little reels for the beginner/novice. You can pick them up for between £20-£35 each! You do need some form of indication though fella, either use a float or fish ledger with an alarm or.use both a float and alarm. You need to be alerted straight away that you have a fish round or on your bait otherwise you risk a deep hooked fish - not only is it a pain to get the hooks out but it is DANGEROUS to the fish. Dont delay your strike,if you miss a few fish then so be it. Better to loose a few than risk deep hooking and ENDANGERING THE FISH. REMEMBER TO TAKE AN UNHOOKING MAT AS WELL - ALOT OF SO CALLED PIKE ANGLERS DONT BOTHER. ALSO CARRY DIFFERENT SIZES OF FORCEPS,LONG,MEDIUM,SHORT. A PAIR OF GOOD WIRE CUTTERS IS ALSO ADVISABLE JUST INCASE YOU HAVE A DEEP HOOKED PIKE AND NEED TO CUT THE TRACE!.....BETTER TO HAVE ALL THE CORRECT GEAR JUST INCASE. iF YOU NEVER USE IT SO BE IT BUT AT LEAST ITS THERE IF YOU ENCOUNTER PROBLEMS............ALWAYS THINK FISH SAFETY!
