In what way were the pike annoying the match men? and how did they know it was pike?

Will be giving it a go for carp myself some time!
I work for AFBI, there is a station up there so we were down doing a bit of work, we had a bit of free time so decided go to go for a dander

Yeh its down that direction so it is.

One angler had his keep net attacked and the other was getting roach hit on the way in. Nothing going to do that apart from pike!

I was looking in the wee shop and the carp look a half decent size.

Re: Gave up Piking...

Was out tonight for an 2 and a half hours...

Went to peg 33, my da was on 32... got fresh herring out of tesco's before we left and set them up under a float once we got there.

We sat, and sat, and sat, and sat, and sat... lucky enough i'd a few beverages with me...

Seen fish rising all night long, even seen a police helicopter flying across as well as a cloud that looked like a UFO (Maybe something to do with this meteor shower we're getting later)

As the darker nights are closing in, it means that loughgall closes earlier, the main gates shut at 9.30pm now, meaning we have to start packing up at 9pm and walk up to the car to get out before the gates shut. I have enquired but no night fishing is allowed now, thanks to our foreign friends... scum...

Anyway, just before we packed up, i was over at my da's peg and we heard this big jump in the reeds beside us, so i said to pull his float in and throw it towards where we heard the splashing... within 10 seconds the float started bobbing, i said to wait til it goes under... 15 seconds later it did and BANG we were into one. Only a tiny one, but BY GOD WE WERE GLAD TO SEE A PIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First pike we had got in over a year for god sake.

Anyway that's when things turned sour...

We decided, as it was getting close to packing up time, because we'd caught one we would just head on... so i went back round to my peg... pulled my line in and started packing up. As I say, i was happy that we'd actually got one in a year (or more) but at the same time i was annoyed that it wasnt me that had got it.. so whilst packing up i managed to lose a homemade trace, THEN put a 10 inch rip in my brand new pike landing net... Stuarty seen red... everything was fucked over the hedge and i stormed off in a huff, not because dad had caught and i didnt, but because im the one who spends countless hours every week researching what way to go about catching fish, im the one who spends stupid amounts of money every month on fishing equipment and yet im the one who NEVER EVER has any luck!!! My new fishing chair was thrown onto the golf course also, but luckily dad wasn't seeing red like myself and he lifted all my "shit that i dont fucking want anymore" - LOLOL.

Re: Gave up Piking...

Cheers man, calmed down a bit now lol. No, we were just piking, 1 rod each. Da's looking to go on saturday for the day, but after last night i dont know if i could stick another blank!

If i do end up going i'll either be going all out piking (2 rods) or all out roach/breaming. Its too much hassle carry all the gear i need for both types of fishing!

I see what you mean about fishing those pegs (30-50) there was lillies the whole way down there, so IF i do go sat i'll ne heading down that direction again. I was wondering last that maybe its the bait we're using thats the problem? Its usually mack tails or last night we had herring... maybe loughgall pike dont like sea fish that much? would a roach be a better bait as thats what they're used to eating? I find that when i buy roach out of the tackle shop they are near impossible to get on the hook! when i finally break the skin, the hook isnt secure at all :S
