| Paternoster Rig help So I bought a Greys 360 Boom Paternoster Rig out lof the local tackle shop after watching this video of Martin Bowler - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beq3LQLrRXs I live near the River Bann and it's quite fast flowing (at times) and VERY weedy. So I thought buying this could help me deal with both the flow, and the weeds. Here is a picture of the rig along with 2 pics of how you can set it up. ![]() ![]() ![]() I'll be looking to use the sliding float rig, rather than the sunken one. A few questions that I'm looking your help with... 1) In Martin's video, does he have the depth of the river perfected so that the 3oz bomb can sit on the bottom AND the float cocks itself? Or is the inline bomb cocking the float and the 3oz is just lying on the bottom? If so, I can't actually get my head around that! ![]() 2) On the Grey's Rig that I have bought, there is just swivels to attach my trace and line to. How do I attach my trace to the boom when the end of the boom AND trace are both circular swivels? Can you buy single clips for doing this? If so, is that not just putting all the pressure of the (hopefully caught) fish onto the clip? Rather than your line? 3) How do those inline weights work? Do they just slide up your line and are fixed with some rubber? I have blanked I would honestly say the last 20 times I have been out Piking and it's starting to do my head in. We usually just set up using sliding float rigs and fish at different depths throughout the session. I have tried off the bottom but no joy yet either! Has anyone got a handy to make bait pop up rig that they could show me? I tried making my own the other night but it didn't work out ![]() We usually fish at a lake but I have recently got my permit and that's why I'm trying this River out now as well. I appreciate any help you's keen anglers can give me! Thanks, Stuarty Last edited by Fishing Forum Admin; 04-28-2010 at 02:36 PM. |

| Re: Paternoster Rig help Sorry, another addition to my query... If I had a 30g Sliding Float. Does that mean that a 30g weight will sink it, or cock it? I thought sink to be honest but I'm not sure. I thought if I had a 30g float, I could stick a 15g weight on + my bait? |

| Re: Paternoster Rig help watched a bit of the video lol..hes one ugly bugger ![]() I've only ever water ski'd on the Bann so im not much help im afraid but i can answer these for you..... the depth has been plummed so that the float sits right with the aid of a sliding stop knot ....the trace is attached using a swivel clip or crane snap swivel...and the float will cock with , as you said, a combination of the weight PLUS the bait ..inline leads are either pre drilled and contain silicone rubber tubing or a re just drilled and the line simply passes through ( if you want some i have over 1000 here in camo colours lol ) Just out of interest in a river with flow i see little point in using a boom as its over complicating things ! The flow of the water should keep the bait away from the mainline ( as in drift fishing at sea ) plus i bet it cost silly money !! As i say im no expert ( ask yer local boy Blackwater for proper advice ) but i have used a float before lol... __________________ Shore Species 2012: Dab-Flounder-Herring-L.S.Dogfish-Pouting-Shore Rockling-5 Bearded Rockling-Small Eyed Ray-Turbot-Whiting |

Does the stop knot not just determine the depth im fishing at? I cant get my head around how the 3oz bomb is cocking the float as well as the inline bomb PLUS the bait! A swivel clip or crane snap swivel still has only one "opening" end, i need 2 if im connecting 2 "circular" links??? Yeah mate i'll take a few, how much are ya? They sound like a good job. Silly money? you could say that lol, £6.99. Ive a problem though, everytime i go into the tackle shop i always buy something that i dont really need! So can anyone shed light on the proper way to cock a 20g or 30g float? I looked at inline bombs online there but cant find anything under 50g!!??! Surely that would leave my float dredging along the bottom of the lake? lol |

![]() 6.99 omfg !! i'll hunt out some sea booms i use and show you a pic ..it simply threads through the line and rotates around the rig body ...is about 4 inches long and costs about 2 quid for 5 ? it has a plastic eye on the end so you can clip or tie your wire trace Steve __________________ Shore Species 2012: Dab-Flounder-Herring-L.S.Dogfish-Pouting-Shore Rockling-5 Bearded Rockling-Small Eyed Ray-Turbot-Whiting |

| Re: Paternoster Rig help I'll do my best to help you... First of all i'll just let you know my knowledge of tha Bann is limited as far as pike are concerned! but you see to be honest i would forget all this stuff you see on videos and TV... The rig he used is good for that river where its not too deep but what i know of the bann at portadown it is fairly deep and this set up is more ideal for rivers that are shallower... The setups you have previously been using will work just aswell for the Bann as other places, no need for all the use of a boom just go for the standard float set up, also try a few static baits on the bottom and also try different baits that you havn't before, if you havent tried lamprey give it a shot. The most important thing for pike fishing is KEEP IT SIMPLE! if you remember that you will go places.
