| Frost n Ice Went down Exeter canal today. Firstly had to scrape an inch of ice off the windscreen, which was a surprise, as I thought it was gonna be milder last night. Finally got on the way, and on arriving at the canal carpark, I was greeted by man returning to his car, who advised me the canal was frozen! However he did say Turf basin, right at the end of the canal was totally free of ice (strange but true). Trekked down to Turf basin, and set up one rod on float/deadbait, tried spinning for a while with the other rod, but no luck. Tried my deadbaits at various spots around the basin, in the margins, middle, and t'other side by the boats and eventually had one jack pike on floatfished sardine, about 6 ft from the bank. Weather wasnt too bad actually, but was bit too bright for most of the day, though the forecast had said cloudy/sunny spells. Still it was a nice fresh day, and 1 pike to show for it. Although it doesnt look it, the canal is nearly all frozen on the pic looking back up the canal from Turf. You can see the line of ice start halfway up the pic...(the 2nd picture) [IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG] |

| Re: Frost n Ice Hi Dave, It isnt too far actually. I used a rucksack to carry my bits, that meant all I had in my hands was rods n landing net, though rucksack bit heavy to start with, flasks, sandwiches, deadbait, but at least it is lighter on the way back. Only problem was I didnt have a chair with me, though there are 2 handily placed wooden seats where the canal narrows just at the entrance to the basin, which is quite handy (you can see one bench in 2nd pic) Dont know if you have been down there before, but the 2nd picture down showing the stretch of canal is basically the distance you have to walk, as the car park is at the end of the stretch that you see in the pic. I am trying to rig up a trolley or something so I can take chairs and a bivvy down possibly in the future. I usually rig up a spinning rod and have a few chucks as I walk along, so I aint sure how long it takes to walk without stopping. Probably 15/20mins max. |
