| Re: Early Winter Start Tommorow... Sorry about this late reply, I really dont know what is wrong. The internet browser loads the pages on this site at a very slow speed and sometimes times out and on some other forums but most other sites are fine... any ideas? Sunday marked the first complete year of me starting to fish on my own with out the overlook of my father, and to be completely honest i am overjoyed at how it has gone with 2 high doubles and a twenty, however sunday was a low point in the year... Well all i can say is that the elements where against us, we blanked, but my outlook is that the bad days only make the good days even better. So i am staying positive. Headed off early about 7.30 while it was still dark and it was calm, not a breath of wind which was great for a nice winter morning, not much frost if any, even with the fairly clear sky. We set up with 3 ledgered rods tight on the bottom as i had felt about with a lead and felt the bottom to be fairly solid. We fished smelt, mackerel and herring to give us some variety, ideally i would have preffered some eel or lamprey but the tackle shop had none in stock. We kept one rod for the lures, and one was set up for a sliding float to about 4 foot with a dead roach. ![]() As you can see from the above photos the water level is high, due to the copius amounts of rain that has fallen recently, which is another reason why the fish may have been off the feed. Well from early on we seen fish moving on the surface so we were keeping a close eye on our float which with each cast was drifting up the inside margins. It was on about the 4th cast when we noticed a slight movement from it, so we were hoping to land our first fish from this lough... it started to move off and away she went, i struck into a fish that felt in around the 7lb mark, but i didnt manage to land it and i take full blame, i had been messing about with the reels at home and had tightened up the clutch so on the first real surge off energy it pulled out as it must have had a weak hook hold . This filled us with confidence of another fish... unfortunately the conditions changed quickly, the wind picked up derastically and it was hard to manage the float and the rods on the alarms were not producing much action either. The above photos dont show the full extent of the wind, it really was frustrating... we finished up about 4 just before dark with out a fish, but atleast i was out, better than sitting infront of the TV! Well i expect i will be back and see if i can get a few pike back on the bank this sunday...
