Re: tips on canal pike

i have fished a canal like that in this part of the world, sometimes its just a matter of keep catching them jacks, sooner or later you will hook a bigger one,
i would be inclined to put the biggest herring i can find out there, that should deter some of the smaller fish
have you considered using a jack as livebait ?,

Their action in the water is class... When all my other lures fail i always resort to my trusty Dawg.... I'm not saying that a jack wont take them but from my experience i tend to catch a better quality fish when using Dawgs.

Re: tips on canal pike

if theres any area where boats are moored up for long periods, thats an area well worth a hunt

and if any weeds/overgrowth on edges , bridges??

our canal is mostly spinners at moment due to weed, but deads will be working soon

Re: tips on canal pike

The great thing about canals is that they have good banks so use the leap frog method of fishing if your not getting runs that way you will find the pike not the pike find you

Re: tips on canal pike

Sam, i have never had much success with bulldawgs, i find that you cant beat a good old trusty copper spoon.

As far as the canals are concerned i would listen to Richard and have a go at the leap frog method, its a good place to try it out at the canal.

Re: tips on canal pike

I would get them dead baits out there.I fish the fen drains and I seem to catch a lot of small pike on the lure rod .Great fun but for the bigger pike I always do well when dead baiting .makrel tail,,,,sardine,,,,and as above herring.keep working at it good luck
