| I'm alright Jack So I decided to have a bash at my favourite piking river today, and took myself along to the river Soar. After the shocking run of blanks I've had I needed a bit of luck, and I got both types! Having set up close to a lock, I cast out a pair of dead baits, and set about with my spinning rod and a Mepps #4 spinner. 3rd cast I got a couple of taps and struck into a cheeky little perch, not what I was after but a fish is a fish, so I enjoyed it all the same. Unfortunately that was the last action I got for a couple of hours, as the deads diddn't budge, so time to change tactics. I shifted upstream about 500yds and swapped to the far bank. In came the popped up herring and lampray, and out went a floated perch, and bream. My braid spool was playing up, tangling me to distraction, so the spinning was all over, so to improve my chances I left the perch static, and wobbled the bream in. I got nothing on the bream, but the float with the perch on took a few knocks. I thought it was twigs etc in the flow of the river, (which was crystal clear), then a big tug under before popping back up again, still knocking. I wound down and struck, and saw a big bend in the rod, a decent fish. Straight away I saw it ( as big as yer leg guv) coming up to the surface as the float was only 5' out, then it dropped the bait, and mooched off slowly, giving me the bird as it went. .I carried on regardless wobbling the bream and perch and for another couple of hours, still nothing. Then I dropped the depth of the bait by a good 3', and first cast on a slow retreive the perch got nailed! It put up a decent fight for its size, but was possibly the smallest jack I've ever landed, 3lb at best! But my run of blanks is over, and I'll be back later this week to the same spot, to get his big sister! I'm now having a celebratory beer, Cheers! |
