Sweet Sixteen...

11.10.09

This was to be the second time hitting this certain venue, and this time we were only concentrating on this venue as having a go at 2 really isnt a great idea.

Again we couldnt set off as early as maybe we would have liked as we need to wait for adequate light to drive the tractor in.

It was about 20 to 8 by the time we were packed and ready to go, this week we opted not to take the flat bed trailer but to hook up the link box to sit in and then to attach the bike trailer onto the back to carry the tackle. It was a nice way to go fishing but i dont think i would have liked to go any great distance in it.

There was noone about when we got to the lough and it was at a similiar water level to last week dispite the large amounts of rain during the week, which wasnt a bad thing cause i find that just after a rise in water level the pike fishing is often not great.

Before we got the Dead baits out we started doing a bit of Spinning, As my cousin david was with us he was able to provide us with a large selction of Spoons and Plugs. It was not long before we had a small pike on of of the jointed plugs.

It was nothing large but still it was a fish none the less, after a while we had landed a few more, they were still pike but i will have to say that they were the smallest i have ever caught or seen.

There were a few this size

We had cast the surface to a froth so it was time to set up the dead bait rods, they were all ledgered at range with, eel, roach, mackerel, herring and Sprat. They were very slow to say the least... But then BLLEEEEEPPPP!!! a screeming run, its not unrealistic to say it was the most ferocious run that i have came across but embarrasingly we missed it!

So while we waited on the alarms were were doing a bit more casting around with the spoons, and it wasnt long before we had another jack at about 3lbs. It was now around 12.00 and it was starting to cloud over which wasnt a bad thing for the fishing perspective. With a bit more casting about we realised that with a speedy retrieve we were gettin plucks at the lure, so it was are new plan of attack to retrieve the lures slightly quicker and it soon resulted in a fish. This time we knew it was no jack as it was starting to run the clutch, the fight was great it didnt really seem to head to any features but it was still thrashing about and displaying plenty of surface action by splashing about on the surface, i waded in to land the fish as my cousin had luckily lent me a pair of waders for the day.. with out the waders it would have been a hard job landing her...

She brought the scales down to a very satisfying 16lbs exactly

It was the 3 rd double of the year and as i'm sure you can imagine we were ecstatic!

In My Opinion it looks bigger than 16lbs but i trust my scales to be right

We had little more serious action for the rest of the day, i think we had 3 more pike, this time on the Dead baits, falling to eel, sprat and roach. So it was off home in are very agricultural mode of travel

For only are second trip to this venue we are very pleased with the results!! We will be back shortly to try and catch another magic 20lber

BW

Re: Sweet Sixteen...

That's the kind of piking day I dream of mate. Well done!

I'm off for a bit of action myself tomorrow on a midlands river known for its pike so hopefully will have good news myself.

Fingers crossed!
