Norfolk bound

Well, after struggling on my local midlands canal, I've a proper "fishing trip" sorted next Tuesday, over at a still water venue in the Norfolk swamp. The plan is to arrive Mon night, catch up with my old mate Mark with a few beers

.... and hit the lake early doors, (but my record for on time arrival after beer isn't so good!). We've a good range of deads and a pair of spinning rods so hopefully will have all the angles covered. Will post pics if our luck is in. If there's any justice in the world after all the recent summer blanks!

Re: Norfolk bound

Overcast sky and a good ripple on the water meant we were optimistic for the day's piking, relatively low pressure too meant that we actually came home from the pub the night before early enough to make a dawn arrival at the lake! Now I'm an optimistic bloke, (how can you fish and not be?) but there's no way of making this sound any better than it was, we tried..........

lamprey on the bottom, (always scores here)
lamprey popped up,
roach on the bottom
roach popped up
eel sections as above
wobbled dead baits right accross a hole where the pike hide up

Mark got 1 take late in the day to a popped up roach and although he let the fish run for a couple of seconds before tightening down and striking, it then promptly dropped the bait and went back to sleep. In the end I resorted to picking up skimmers and roach on maggot just to pass the time.

we blanked

Once in the truck and on the way home at 5pm a look at the truck's thermometer showed a barmy 19 degrees, and I think that combined with rain throughout the morning quite heavy at times shot our chances. I then drove FOR FIVE HOURS through a monsoon from Norwich to Warrington for a 4.30 am start for work.

It can be a cruel sport at times! I have to say I think we really need a cold snap to bring the fish on the feed properly as apart from the loch fishing north of the border, there's not much doing anywhere pike-wise! Hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow, but blanking never helps your confidence does it?

Cheers Chappa
