PB Smashed !!

Hi all,


Headed out for our usual spot on the lough, and had my Dad's 'Lucky' rod in tow, this rod had caught all our Pike Pbs in the past but i had not used it for severel years and i just thought i would give it a go. Got to the bank for about 4.15am after heading out at 4.00am, set up four rods as per usual, all ledgered about 30-40ft range. Had been to the tackle shop the day before to get some bait and i noticed they had lamprey so i thought i would give them a turn as i had been looking for them for a while, so i set up 2 rods with the lamprey and the other 2 with a head and tail of a joey makerel. It was not long before we caught are first pike, it must only have been 20 minutes,




It was a very acrobatic 8lb fish, it had fallen to the lamprey so i was glad to see the fish had a likeing to it. As the lough seems to do, it had a spell of numerous fish, we had landed 6 fish in the hour and the action showed no sign of slowing down, with runs coming often, after seeing a few fish up around the surface i cast out a float fished roach and you will probably not believe me, but with in 20 seconds of the float touching the water we were into another nice pike.

This time it weighed around 4-5lbs,



There was another 3 fish in the next hour averaging 6-7lbs all coming on the ledgered baits.

It started to pour at about 8.00am but it was at 8.10 that the real action of the day unfolded, it was not an extraordinary run, it was just like any other, but when we struck into the fish we knew we were in for a scrap and a nice fish at the end of things.

The fish bolted off towards, the far lillies in the bay and i had not just realised the sheer size of it by this stage so when i stopped it and i gt it turned it's head left the water and it was only then i noticed the size.

It was now panic stations and i was just praying that all the tackle would hold up and that my knots were ok

It made several more surging runs about the lough but i had her under control and we slipped it over the net and had her landed in about 15mins, it very nearly didnt fit in the landing net

It was hooked very lightly and was taken to lamprey and you guessed it on my dad's lucky rod, which is almost 20 years old .

It was put into the sling and weighed 21Lbs 4Oz , i was in total ecstacy reading the scales, it was by far the biggest pike i have ever caught and was the biggest pike i have ever personally saw landed.

The day went on to around 3.30 and we landed a total of 24 pike and lost about 5 or 6.

So it was by far the most succesful day i have ever had and most likely will ever have.

Don't be so sure though, that's what PB's are there for.... To be broken.... Keep this up and I'm sure a bigger fish will come....
