first ever pike hooked me tips req

hello to forum and this my 1st post so be gentle well im a fly fisher normally but just took up pike fishing as well as we going loch awe on 3rd july for 4 days nights soooo . sunday i decided to have a try at piking set my rod up cast out my big s had about 5 cast then nothing so moved up to to a stretch of water that was in a little bay and second cast i hit a pike . was only a small jack pike about a pound and half but was hooked through top lip and bottom lip. this pike was still as you like and i got trebble out of top lip was was still stuck in bottom lip and a bit awkward to get out then sudenly the pike lunged and sunk the other trebble at the back of the big s right up to the bend of hook in my finger. so pike was stuck to front trebble and my finger to back trebble . cut the pike free with help of mate as i couldnt do anything then a little bankside surgery to remove my hook. yes let a little yelp out when it came out but i guess moral of the story is dont underestimat a pike . oh and use forceps . ill remember that one for future . so thats my 1st outing . could anyone point me in the right direction of some good setups for using a dead bait . i dont mean hot to hook the fish to trace but actuall rig setup. ive bought two floats to try a polaris self plumbing and another type of self plumbing pencil float . what are these types of floats like used on braid ? the type of piking i want to be doing apart from using lures is dead baits ledgered and dead baits ledgerd using float and a suspended deadbait from float so if its not too much to ask in one post could somone point me in right direction of some rig setups please . thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum,

Have a look at these posts to get you going:

Pike Fishing Rigs

Pike - Pike Fishing

a useful method

Making a wire trace for pike fishing

There arent too many photos of rigs, but the rig i use is a simple running ledger with a 2oz weight running on mainline with bead either side to protect the knots, mainline tied to trace with two semi barbed trebles.

Take a look at the images of how to hook the bait, this is important so you dont deep hook the pike.

Pike are looked upon as a very hardy fish, but that is just a misconception so take care with them.

Tight lines,

BW

ok heres my favourite rig for pike works well on open water and rivers ,use a carp rod with a 18 lb main line use a large shot ssg should be ok place a 2oz wieght then another ssg about a foot from the end of your line which in turn should be tied to a 1 foot trace with two triple hooks ,set the hooks bout six inch apart and use mackerel for bait (let it mature a few days before as it will let off more scent in the water)then place rod on a rest and place an elastic band just infront of your reel, when you cast and bait is sunk take the slack and place under the band to hold it tight, then place a piece of plastic tubing over your line just behind the first loop on your rod this is your bite detector when the line pulls out of the band the plastic bobbin drops indicating a bite ,sound more coplicated than it is but is very effective let me know if you get to try it

Re: first ever pike hooked me tips req

PLEASE strike early when your float goes, a lot of people will let the pike run then stop then wait a bit then strike, when the pike stops runing this is it turning the deadbait head first to swallow so if you wait just that little too long then you have a deep hooked pike with a treble in its gills, if this happens and the fish starts bleeding from the gills its a gonner!
so please strike early and ALWAYS carrry long forceps, i also like to carry a pair of wire snips so if the fish is hooked awkwardly then i can snip the hooks and remove them from the mouth.
i fish loch awe myself and you will get a lot of fish if you hit the bays

also use the barbless traces and buy some bait elastic to hold the bait on, if you cant find barbless traces then squaush the 2 of the barbs on each hook and only use the barbed ones to set the bait.
if you would like any more info on loch awe let me know
happy hunting!
