| Summer Piking OK, so I'm not an experienced piker by any stretch; had a handfull of decent fish on deads, never had one on a lure, and always only had them in winter. I've had a go at several locations since it warmed up; a well known local piking canal, commercial containing pike, big res, and I've had nothing, bar a drop back bite I missed on Wednesday on the canal. (maybe my fault, I was using a front mounted bite alarm with a rear facing drop back arm?) So can anyone tell me where i'm going wrong? I'm reading anything I can on the subject but no one has really highlighted any significant difference in tactics between summer and winter? When I got the drop off earlier I DID panic a bit and struck too hard- the fish was swimming towards me, and slightly to the right, so I probably pulled the bait from its mouth. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks for reading Chappa |

| Re: Summer Piking Personally i dont see a huge differnence in the way the pike feed in the winter, but that could be localised to my area, but i would say that they do feed higher in the water and with out a doubt put up better fights than in the winter, BW __________________ Copyright © All Rights Reserved. | Re: Summer Piking this is true, but you dont see as many big fish in the summer tho as the hens will just eat when they need to (winter) thats why our best chance of catching a monster is in winter as the hens are feedin up to spawn in the summer it seems to be JACKS-R-US as the big hens only come out to play when they need to whereas the smaller pike are constantly feeding to get bigger than the next small pike so its chances of becoming prey to one of its bretheren become slimmer! (im using the term "jack" as any small pike, rather than any "male" pike) |

| Re: Summer Piking me too! last time i fished the ****** loch i had a few fish up to 7lb, a 7lb,er by pike standards is still a small fish but a summer 7lb,er WOW what a fight, my PB is 27lb 9oz, caught at the tail end of winter, but id rather a 7lb summer fish than a 20lb winter fish. the little 7lber got airborne twice and even tailwalked for me! loveley day. im hopefull we'll have an even better one! but i tell ya, if we blank im resigning from this forum as the shame would kill me lol wont come to that though, we will get fish whether they be huge perch, small pike, small roach or a bonus brownie. you can call me on 07927 145 107 or 07521 540 816 (to admin) i'v put my numbers up as anyone is welcome to come along, if you are willing to meet up near the bathgate area at around 0330-0400 even just bring a light trout rod if you fancy perch or even targeting the smaller pike chappa, im just gonna PM you my address and postcode (still suffering from concussion so not sure if i'v already done this!!!) |
