My first double Pike

Having taken the week of for the kids half term I was determined to get at least a couple of days fishing in. My first oportunity was last weekend, when I persuaded Elliot (Devon born) to have a go on the Frome for a Pike and and maybe a lucky Salmon par for our species hunt.

When we arrived at the river the water was well up. In fact it had only just dropped to bank level. Though it was clear so I had hopes of maybe being able to grab a Grayling ot two.

We set up a couple of rods for Pike. Unfortunatly both of us had bad first casts and lost our gear on the far bank snags and bushes. Fortunatly Elliot was later able to recover mine (again).

We sat for a couple of hours without a twitch. We both set up our float rods and tried trotting for Graying or anthing else that was around. Unfortunatly, there seemed nothing else around that was interested in our baits.

I thought I might go for a wander and try a bit of wobbling, so I set of for the upper stretch. I soon got bored with the fast flow and so started looking for likelly holdig spots. As I moved back down towards Elliot I spotted a nice small bay in a back water. I thought if I dropped my dead baited Roach at my feet it would sweep back into the little bay.

As soon as I dropped it down, a shape darted out from under my feet, spun round and disapeared again. Dare I hope that it was a Pike that had just grabbed my free lined dead bait? I gave it slack and waited as I wached the line drift into the bay I wanted the dead bait to drift into.

After 30 seconds I wound back into my bait, where I had my hopes confirmed. It had been a Pike that had grabbed my bait and it was still on the end of my line. After a breif and if I have to be honest fairly boring battle, I landed the Pike. What was exciting was to see the pike take the bait right under my feet.

I quickly weighed it and had Elliot take a picture of it and curse me at the same time :-) It topped the scales at 10 and a 1/2lb exactly. My first double Pike. Not ba considering I had only caught two other Pike previously, my second being less than a month ago.
