what a question mate, there are so many baits out there you will never believe the selection,
firstly any of the usual coarse fish you may catch can be used as live or dead bait and then there is an enormous choice of fish on the fishmongers slab that are very popular with mackerel, herring and sardine being used most,
then you have the vast selction of frozen dead baits that are available in most good tackle shops these days
i think i could probably go on for a couple of hours about baits but i think thats enough to start with,
if you have any more queries about the pike please feel free to ask

Re: Pike Fishing Rigs

are all the baits that you've mentioned year round baits or do you find some fish better at different times of year.?

Re: Pike Fishing Rigs

in my experience baits seem to vary from water to water,
natural deadbaits like roach and bream usually work well everywhere but sea fish can sometimes be ignored
one water i used to fish years ago was absolutely brilliant when using livebaits but rubbish with any deadbait,if you didn't manage to catch livebait you might as well go home,
i would have a look round your water and chat to other anglers, most are friendly and will gladly tell you what they are catching with.

Re: Pike Fishing Rigs

Hi all,
realy only dabbled at pike fishing upto now, and well to be honest struggling a little too. I'm spinning with dead baits writely or wrongly, and have had a couple of bites but what i'm realy struggling with is recognising the bite in the 1st place. I may not quite have the speed of reeling back in quite right as i snag the bottom quite a bit. So any advice is more than welcome. where can I get smelts from too, have tryed tescos unsuccessfully.

Cheers weedy.

if you are snagging the bottom quite a lot you need to speed your retrieve up a tad, smelt can be bought from tackle dealers, most have freezers full of pike baits these days
