I looked back at some of my old records a while back, and I think it's true that as far as the bigger fish(doubles) are concerned most of the time the deads are just as likely to nail them. But, if you want action, you can't beat livebaits! Funny thing is, on one water I fish all the pike of whatever size seem to prefer seafish deadbaits. I once fished a live rudd next to a whole sardine for the day, had 4 on the sardine and not a sniff on the rudd. It's a funny old game

Re: live-baiting

Guys come on there is nothing like watching your float bob up and down, before being hammered by a monster and then listening to that run before battering into a fish and dragging its ass back to shore. I can't believe its banned on most shores its a total outrage. Species transported from loch to loch is a BAD thing but if you have the patience to catch a 6 inch carp surely you can attatch a big dirty treble to it and punt it out there. Live bait always beats silly worms and reaking maggots

Re: live-baiting

Great thread folks - been over on the 'Antis' thread quite a bit and this is a great complement !

Sadly, I can imagine live-baiting being 'surrendered' as a concession to the antis in order to keep recreational fishing legal. This doesn't mean that I livebait, but I respect others' choices and, philospohically, if I look through the posts above, I can't see how it can be okay in the sea but not on freshwater ? Yes, and, maggots and worms ARE live, so the argument gets complicated.

But like many things, if the law gets involved, then how is a crime proven ? How many times have you been fishing for, say roach, and you've caught a little silver soldier, you're gently easing him back to base then WHAM , big daddy pike comes along and snaffs your fish. If you're on 1.5lb line then you may have lost the lot, but, if you did land the pike complete with the roach, how would you prove that you weren't livebaiting for pike ? (Okay, the rig and tackle might explain things if an 'expert witness' were called).

I think we need some serious research into fish pain and memory and then decide.

The Karma view is an interesting one too. There is an evolutionary argument as well, in that some think we may have evolved from fish. There are predatory fish and many 'natural' acts of cruelty (ever seen a cat 'playing' with a mouse ?), but for myself, I would always treat the fish with respect and not subject them to any unnecessary suffering. If I deliberately went out after pike I'd probably 'fly' it anyway, but that's me.

Have a look at the fishfeelpain website Miles. It'll blow you away. Apparently they are smarter than us..........

Re: live-baiting

Hi Fishin' Widow

I think this (fishfeelpainandcanalsodocardtricks) is the site directed to from the PETA site I think, isn't it ? Crazy stuff. Fish are much smarter than us and so are slugs. That's possibly because they don't debate all this stuff ....!!

Interesting though, maybe sometimes its a good idea for us to review our ideas about what we feel is acceptable or not and what is barking nonsense and what isn't. Thanks for starting off the 'Antis rise again' thread BTW.
