Re: Pike - Pike Fishing

I know that the best time is early in the morning and the time just before the sunset - its is diferent at the diferent season , at the summer when the day is long its about 20:00 - 21:00.

I have always catched my "best" pikes either in the early morning or in late evening.

But it depends on the color of water you encounter where you fish. Here in Spain, the waters and especially the dam lakes (which are water reserves for the cities) are really transparent.
When I fish in the north of France, I get strikes almost at any time of the day.

Second factor, how quite is where you fish. Places that use to be noisy during the day (joggers, bycicles etc) give me pikes only when it's absolutely quite.

Hope it helps, regards

Re: Pike - Pike Fishing

i have a question, regarding holding the pike. I am a massive Pike Angler, i absolutely love it. The Joy of knowing the pike has gotten back to the waters unharmed and safe is just as good as the joy of catching it.

Anyways my question, i've been told that holding it under the chin is like grabbing it by the balls ( for use of a better phrase), and it won't struggle or move around ?? is this true? and is there any dangers of grabbing it there cause i havent done it before and am abit cautious of it, i usually hold them by the back of the neck and the tail

Re: Pike - Pike Fishing

Good afternoon,
You can hold a pike under the chin if it's not too big. Maximum size would be around 60 cm. It will force it to stop moving and also open the mouth, allowing you to unhook it easily.
When it's bigger, a good technique is to introduce one or two fingers in one of the gills, toward below the mouth. Then you can use your other hand to hold the rest of the body. Note in that case you will need a tool to open its mouth.
Regards.
(Very sorry for my bad English.)

Re: Pike - Pike Fishing

"Smarr":

As my English is so poor for the moment, I leave a number of photos to clarify...:

Method 1, under the chin:

It's really efficient to inmobilize the pike.

But when the pike is a bit more weighty or longer, it can be difficult, so I use the Method 2..., introducing the fingers in the gills. Note the exact position of the fingers, otherwise you will retrieve them really hurted...

Note that in this second method:
- it can be used with smaller pikes, but generally/often the space left inside the gills is not large enough, it's up to you to see it live...
- the pike will keep moving, but do not move your fingers!

Let's see if someone else has other tips.

Re: Pike - Pike Fishing

please do not use method one ,it is not in the pikes best interests do to so,picture two is much better but still treat the pike carefully and with respect,
they may look fierce and rugged but they are really delicate and can die quickly due to mis-treatment,
pike are looked after on the bank because they need to go back in the water to grow bigger
please look at the pike anglers club website, the link is below,it will give you plenty of useful hints about pike handling
